Howren must fight to keep from laughing aloud.

"I guess I was sort of a woman liberator," Howren said. "I wanted to do so many things that being married and raising children and tied to a kitchen at age 20 was not what I wanted to do. I was never bored. I was so busy doing things." She took her first flying lesson in college in 1939. When her parents refused to fund subsequent lessons, Howren secretly hocked possessions (such as her Plymouth's spare tire) to stay in the air.

Only after her first solo flight did she tell her parents what she had done. By then the aviation bug had bitten hard and her life as a professional guinea pig Howren, then Evelyn Greenblatt, was one of America's first female air traffic controllers at Candler Field (later Hartsfield International Airport) in 1941. In November 1942 she was one of 30 members of the original 319th Flying Detachment the first women pilots' training school at Ellington Field in Houston. She was among the 23 to complete the five-month course, and to the delight of Gen. Hap Arnold, commander of the U.S.

Armed Forces, not a plane was scratched during that time. Upon graduation, Howren was assigned to the 5th Ferry Command in Dallas. She spent the next 16 months ferrying all types of planes fighters and bombers included from manufacturing plants to military training centers and points of embarkation for overseas shipment. In the spring of 1944, she was part of a group of women sent by the Army Air Forces to officers' training school in Orlando. Although successfully completing the school, she never became an officer, because the Air Forces decided it would keep its women employees civilians.

Toward the end of the war, Howren was a flight instrument instructor in Colorado Springs, certifying men who would become pilots in the armed forces. "Most of the boys didn't seem to resent being instructed by a woman," Howren said. "They were just happy being in the air." In 1946 she formed a business partnership with Hillman Howren, with whom she had been friends since their days working at Candler Field before the war. Together they founded a fixed-base operation called Flightways, opened a flight school, sold and chartered planes, and ran a small air freight company, parts department and repair shop. In the '50s, Howren became a successful aviation lobbyist both at the state Capitol and in Washington.

With the help of Howren's husband, Hillman, Curtiss copied her scrapbook, which chronicles a lifetime in aviation. "Evelyn has had a great flying career, and she was also an astute businesswoman," Curtiss said.
