The Heads had caught their allotment of five fish when they noticed one of the big bass had begun to look a little green around the gills. "One of the largest fish we caught that day came from deep water," Lynn said. "Suddenly it began developing the bends, I guess, because he was so deep in the lake, and we pulled him up to the surface in a big hurry." The 7-pound largemouth bass was too big to throw back into the lake.

But tournament officials penalize teams for bringing in dead fish. So Lynn became the fish's personal nurse. "We certainly didn't want it to die, so I became a nursemaid, quickly dipped my hands into the bucket and began rubbing it," she said. Larry, a self-employed contractorpainter, said the fish was fine by the time the couple arrived at the weigh-in station. "We didn't throw the others back in the water, though, until we determined that the big one was going to be OK," Larry said.

On that day all the fish were 11 years of marriage. In September, they will be doing that same thing only at the USA Couples Championship Fishing Tournament. 'We certainly didn't want the fish to die, so I became a nursemaid Heritage: Mitchell signs with W. Ga. Kasey Mitchell has signed a letter of intent to play football at West Georgia College.

North-South team pairs Allen, Cleary again Mike Blum I SOCCER By Jeff Batten FOR THE JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION Joined at the hip as recent high school teammates and future college teammates, it seemed only logical that Richie Cleary and Luke Allen would find themselves paired together once again as teammates in the annual North-South baseball classic next week. Those two Newton County graduates will join 20 other standouts at Valdosta State on June 17 for a doubleheader against their counterparts from South Georgia. 9. Legion team recently completed a weekend tournament in Decatur, and Cleary is hitting better than .500 for the Dukes, an independent team in Marietta. Cleary and Allen begin their collegiate careers this fall at Southern Union junior college in Wadley, Ala. Cleary said attending a two-year college rather than a four-year school offers more options. "Everybody is telling me a two-year school is the way to go because I can leave or be drafted at any time, whereas there are restrictions at the four-vear col leges," he said.

its best there's the reason the bowling pins are used. Despite its appearance, Salem Country Club, which offers memberships for $125 per year per family, is a challenging and fun way to test your game. Though short in length, many holes are more difficult than you think. Ironically, it's your sand wedge that gets the most use. But instead of blasting out of a bunker, you try to reach the sand.

The best shots are the ones that land short of the "green" and run up to the hole. Still, there's no guarantee that that will do the trick. By far the best aspect of playing at this unassuming place is its laid-back atmosphere. Six dollars ($8 on weekends and holidays) allows you to play as long and as many holes as you want. Get a chili dog at the turn, but make sure you tell the attendant you want a hot dog in the bun, too (a chili dog in these parts consists of only chili in a bun).

And don't be surprised if someone wishes you well by saying, "Hit 'em straight, and dont get sand in your eyes." Lynn and Larry Head have been needed. The Heads ranked 27th in the Georgia division standings entering the event. They could qualify for the USA Couples tournament only if they won. Their previous best on the Guys Dolls circuit had been a fifth-place showing at Lake Lanier. But the couple have been fishing together for a long time.

satisfied with any role. He and Allen also competed for the Northeast all-stars in a three-game metro mini-tournament before school was out. Cleary went 3-for-6, including a double off the outfield fence. "This is what I live for playing baseball every day," he said. "There's pretty good competition out there.

Everybody was their team's leader or star. The coaches play everybody so nobody can complain." Outside of all-star baseball, Allen and Geary have spent most of their summers with independent teams. Allen's American the bowling alley for the white tees, and blue-painted pins for the longer hitters. The pieces de resistance are Salem's sand greens, as much an oxymoron as the term military intelligence. Each hole ends with a 10-yard circular patch of compacted sand, which had been sprayed with oil many years ago until the EPA discontinued the practice.

The hole has a long foot-wide channel leading up to it that is used for putting. When you reach the "green," you measure the distance your ball is from the hole by club lengths, paces or even a tape rule if you want to get really exact and mark it on the channel. Someone grabs a metal scraper thing to smooth the channel's surface, and you're ready to putt Most of the putts are pretty straight, but there are enough undulations to make things frustrating. Sometimes a mis-hit putt is the best thing to do, as the ball glances off the sides of the channel and into the hole, similar to those gutter bumpers used on bowling lanes for beginning Maybe caught by Larry Head, who is a regular on the regional fishing circuit. He recently got a chance to fish with some NFL players and former players at a tournament in Louisiana.

None of the fish boated at Clarks Hill was tiny. The couple's total was 15.62 pounds. The timely performance was a pleasant surprise to Cleary, considering that they were the only area players invited. "Coach Joe Brasfield told me it was very rare for two players off the same team to make this all-star team, so it's an even higher honor," said Cleary, who also shares a summer job with Allen at a Covington pest control company. "I'm very excited about going.

The biggest honor is being picked from all the classes, not just AAAA" Cleary, the Rockdale Extra Male Athlete of the Year, said he was unsure whether he would be used as a pitcher but would be SCOTT BERNARDE Still, there are few golfing experiences like the one offered here. The nine-hole course, which also has its share of great views, has more than one thing that's wonderfully uncommon. Par is 31 for men and 34 for women. The longest hole is only 347 yards, and three others are a wedge shot off the tee for many players. The fairways, which are anything you can point at from the tee, are acres of clover-covered grass.

Golf balls fly everywhere as nearly every hole shares a fairway with another hole. This little town of around 2,000 people nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in north-central West Virginia is a unique place to visit for various reasons. The scenic vistas in the area rival any you'll find in the North Georgia mountains. The friendliness of its people seems extremely genuine. There's also tiny Salem-Teikyo University, which once had Auburn head football coach Terry Bowden directing its Fighting Tigers (the school, named only Salem when Bowden was there, no longer fields a football team) and now has the hypenated name because Japanese businessmen bailed it out of financial difficulty several years ago. Maybe most distinctive about this place is Salem Country Club, a misnomer of sorts because there's nothing similar to the so-called country clubs metro Atlanta golfers are used to playing.
