iL -The Atlanta Journal The Atlanta Constitution SPORTS Monday, August 16, 1993, Oft THE ROAD TO College Football '93 Terry Dean takes over the Gators' Fun 'n Gun offense after three years on the sidelines. He enters the season with only 66 snaps of varsity game experience. Tin Tn mi mil lllli3MClShlit Dean seeks place in Spurrier's line of standout QBs By Thomas Stinson STAFF WRITER w' Gainesville, Fla. Stevej 'Spurrier, in custom with the season, has already proclaimed that his newest quarterback will be 'an All-SEC selection come four months. Reflecting, the Florida coach was also moved to add, "You can quote me on that." Not an unsafe proclamation in that every quarterback Spurrier has started in his six years as a head coach at Duke or Florida has led his league in 'passing.

Yet even by Spurrier standards, this latest coronation may be a little much to lay upon 'the strawberry-blond head of "Terry Dean, a redshirt junior who has never been a college starter in anything, save the dean's list (3.5 in business ad-1 ministrationmarketing). But then, here's Dean's view: "I think any quarterback in this system will lead the league. I think if I have a decent year, I will. But I'll probably end "ip having a great year." is the Florida that the conference has come to tolerate. Barely.

And that is also Terry Dean. With 10 starters returning on offense, with two of the SEC's finest skilled athletes in tailback JSrriet Rhett and receiver Willie Jackson, the Gators again "I wasn't used to that, and the more he did it, the worse I got. It kind of started my performance going down and I couldn't play. I just wasn't happy with where I was and what I was doing. It seemed like a landslide that got worse and worse." Though he never considered transferring, two occurrences turned him around.

Dean played a strong second half against Florida State last year (one touchdown, 138 yards) when Matthews went out with a sore foot. Second, Spurrier had the quarterbacks visit his home last spring for dinner one night, and Dean for the first time found himself in a non-football conversation with the coach, an evening that began to smooth their personal relationship. "Learning the playbook hasn't even been a problem for me," Dean said. "I knew what to do, but I didn't have the confidence to do it That's the difference between a touchdown and an interception. That was my biggest obstacle, feeling comfortable with him." And be sure, there is presently plenty of comfort in Gainesville.

Next stop: Tennessee Associated Press Hampton player dies at meeting from our news services Hampton, Va. Fred Sig-gers, a Hampton University student and football player, collapsed and died Sunday afternoon. "This is difficult," a subdued Hampton coach Joe Taylor said in his office Sunday evening, shortly after returning from a three-hour talk session with the football players. "We're a close team, which means it hurts even more. We're like a family." Siggers collapsed during a team meeting in a classroom in the school's science and technology building at approximately 3:05 p.m., Taylor said.

"We thought it was a seizure at first," Taylor said. "That's what it seemed like." Taylor and a couple of assistant coaches immediately ran to a telephone in the building and called campus security, which in turn called for medical assistance. 10 OFF E3 1 0 OFF MASSAOEEWflOOM OKN7DAVS9MH-1AM JOIMOO VIP Room JapansM Massage. lOMI-tAM UnnJI 10 Off 1MUM8UI 471-C754 iOaM 888-9700 SSSSOiMHwTuclwM BuWL WORLD HEALTH OF ATLANTA Come to See Sunny 1 1 $1 0.00 off 1 nr. with ad Steambath Shower 247DChnhMBr.M.Stl 11iaOpw7 01 U-S ICMnvMkL.

The team, in fact, has already cleared its biggest hurdle: Dean's fear. Fear of failing, fear of feelings, fear of Spurrier himself.

"For three years, I was intimidated," said Dean. why I couldn't do anything right. I'd go out to practice and worry about screwing up rather than what I should be doing. I used to hear his voice coming down the hallway and I'd get nervous." No more. Replacing Shane Matthews, the SEC's career passing leader, Dean brings the team a stronger arm, a larger (6 feet 2, 204 pounds) and more mobile, more vocal quarterback, even with all of 66 varsity snaps to his name.

If there are misgivings about the changeover, they seem to stop at the locker room. "I've practiced with Terry. I've scrimmaged with Terry. There's really no difference," Rhett said. "They're making it sound like Terry's new in town, but he's been with the offense for three years." That Dean believes he already ranks with Georgia's Eric Zeier and Tennessee's Heath Shuler signifies the blind faith in Spurrier's Fun 'n Gun, the offense that has refitted much of the offensive thinking around the backer Mitch Davis, senior; inside linebacker Whit sophomore; inside linebacker Randall Godfrey, sophomore; outside linebacker Maurice Har-rell, junior, cornerback Chad' Wilson, senior; Tremble; strong safety Buster Owens, sophomore; and cornerback Charles Pledger, junior.
