I) SAVINGS 1 2 Thursday, April 11, 1996 The Atlanta Journal The Atlanta Constitution Foo Fighters, That Dog bash'n'pop a teen crowd HI 'SL Foo Fighters Wednesday night at Masquerade Music Park. Sold out. A funfest for 15-year-olds. By Steve Dollar POP MUSIC CRITIC Temperatures may yet be crisp, but Wednesday's triple-bill alternative-rock fest at the Masquerade Music Park was a surj sign that spring has really arrived. Barely IS minutes into openers That Dog's spirited set, the first mosh pit of the season brtike loose.

pThat Dog's lead singer and guTJarist, Anna Waronker, applauded the development and offd crowd-surfing tips like a chieerful camp counselor monitoring her charges at a swimming hole. I Thus annointed, the concert which also featured headliners Foo Fighters and the Amps rolled merrily along. Thank Dave Grohl for that. He's a role model for the well-adjusted rock star. The former drummer for Nirvana, Grohl now fronts his own group, and he's exchanged psychic turmoil for a churning, sometimes screechy ebullience.

For an hour or so, Foo Fighters didn't map the crazy quilt of the soul, but delivered one crunchy, riff-happy song after another. The foursome, which includes former Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear, flirted with Beatlesque melodies, folk-rock and lounge-jazz grooves, but mostly rallied 'it A I around waves of intense, throttling guitars, above which Grohl could holler or hum. On leave from her more successful outfit, the Breeders, Amps leader Kim Deal comes off as happy-go-lucky, glad to have a chance to indulge her garage-rock instincts with lots of low-fi bash'n'pop. The performance matched the music in its unapologetic lack of ambition and utterly casual attitude. By comparison, That Dog was a case study in conceptual songwriting.

The Los Angeles quartet, fronted by Waronker and featuring sister Rachel and Petra Haden (daughters of jazz legend Charlie Haden), harmonizes in deliberately flat, girly voices about high school heartbreak themes. They shifted skillfully between the breakneck tempos of hard-core punk and the bubblegum reveries of, say, the Archies. Surprisingly, this made for disarming fun.
