F8 Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997 COLLEGE FOOTBALL The Atlanta Journal The Atlanta Constitution AROUND THE STATE Valdosta St. puts end to N. Alabama score streak Fort Valley rolls over Clark 27-6 i Panthers drop fourth in a row I i 1 3S WA BRIDGES JR. Staff In pursuit: Miles quarterback Xavier Douthard is surrounded by Morris Brown's Virgil Perkins (9), Larry McColley (78), Antonio Alexander (99) and Lednard Dunlap (57).

Morris Brown's big fourth clinches upset over Miles 14 plays. Solomon put the final touch on this trip to the end zone with a 14-yard toss to senior receiver David Ferguson with 2:33 remaining in the opening period. Playing without junior quarterback David Kennedy, who is lost for the rest of the season after suffering four broken toes in last week's game against Miles, Clark Atlanta could muster little or nothing offensively with junior college transfer Gary Catchings in as Kennedy's replacement. Compounding the woes of the Panthers, who could manage only 41 yards total offense in the first 30 minutes compared to Fort Valley's total of 210, was a fumble on a botched hand-off between Catchings and running back Israel Thompson that eventually resulted in a second period touchdown: Two plays after Fort Valley freshman lineman Darryl Clark pounced on the ball at Clark 'Atlanta's 9-yard line, Wildcats freshman LaVorris White sprinted off the left side from his tailback spot for a TD from 6 yards out. Clark Atlanta, down 21-0 at half, threatened only once before intermission.

With freshman Alfred Clemmons spelling Catchings at quarterback, the Panthers moved inside Fort Valley's 10, only to regress because of busted plays and penalties. Any hopes the team from the Atlanta University may have had regarding a second-half comeback vanished when Solomon capped an 8-play, 52-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Clayton late in the third quarter. Clark Atlanta's lone score came on a 5-yard run by freshman Charles Turner with 4:15 remaining. ASSOCIATED PRESS Donnie Johnson threw two touchdown passes to Mike Bowman on Saturday to lead Valdosta State to a 21-0 win over North Alabama. Valdosta State (3-2 overall, 2-0 Gulf South Conference) snapped North Alabama's (3-2, 1-2) scoring streak at 94 consecutive games.

The last time the Lions failed to score was a 1989 loss to Mississippi College. Valdosta's defense also held the Lions to 166 yards total offense only one week after North Alabama set a school record with 752 yards offense against Arkansas Tech. Jerome Mills intercepted a pass at the goal in the second half to preserve the shutout, i i Georgia Southern 49, VMI Roderick Russell rushed for three touchdowns and Kenny Robinson threw for two more to lead the Eagles. Georgia Southern (4-1, 3-0 Southern Conference) limited VMI (0-5, 0-3) to 74 yards passing and 110 yards on the ground, sacked the quarterback three times, intercepted one pass and Recovered a fumble. 1 Russell had 87 yards on 17 carries, including scoring runs of 18, VS and 2 yards.

Robinson was 9-for-16 for 179 yards with TD passes of 57 and 17 yards. Carl -Small added 111 yards on 11 car-k for the Eagles, ranked No. 17 IriDivision I-A. Albany State 41, Savannah State 3: Purvis Jackson threw three touchdown passes to Vin-i' vceht Huff and also scored on a 6-yard run for Albany State. Jack-; son's scoring passes to Huff recovered 41, 33 and 64 yards.

Alabama 38, More-house 14: Valeska Johnson threw for 241 yards and three touch-' 1 downs to lead Alabama Ternell Lockett scored on a 2- yard run for Morehouse in the second quarter and quarterback Lpnzy Robertson had a 3-yard TD "rijn for Morehouse in the fourth. mmrooT up ALL SEASON RADIAL HIGH ON QUALITY, LOW ON PRICE. SIZI I T-MZTRIC 17 "1 By Earnest Reese STAFF WRITER Fort Valley About an hour and a half before his team was to face Clark Atlanta in an SIAC matchup at Wildcats Stadium Saturday nightr Fort Valley State quarterback Renotto Solomon was reflecting on his team's blowout loss to Kentucky State the weekend before. "We didn't do anything right. We did a lot to beat ourselves," Solomon said.

"It'll be different tonight." Indeed it was. With the 6-4, 195-pound sophomore from Warner Robins spearheading the attack, Fort Valley State (2-3) rolled to a 27-6 victory over the Panthers (2-4) before a crowd of 5,022. It was the fourth loss in a row for Clark Atlanta, which was inept on both sides of the ball on this night. Solomon was much more effective than in last week's 38-7 loss to Kentucky State. Before he took a breather in the fourth period, he had thrown three touchdown passes and kept three drives alive by scrambling for first-down yardage.

Fort Valley, which came into the SIAC matchup having beaten Clark Atlanta five games in a row and in 14 of the their last 16 battles, looked the part of a finely tuned offensive machine on its first two possessions. Guided by Solomon, the Wildcats marched 64 yards in seven plays to go up 7-0 with 11:17 showing in the opening period. On that drive, Solomon, who entered the game with a 50 percent completion average, hit on five passes in a row including a 38-yarder to junior wide receiver Marcus Clayton for the touchdown. Trailing 24-7 after a five-yard touchdown pass from Xavier Douthard to Wayne Thomas with 1:15 left in the third, Lewis Tray-lor fell on the ball in the end zone with 14:48 left in the game to cut the lead to 10 (24-14). Another Douthard TD pass, this one to Demetrius Hollings with 12:19 left, followed, but Weaks found Jones for a 28-yard score, then scored on a one-yard run with 4:19 left, before the clinching play with seconds left. Weaks completed 13 of 35 passes for 231 yards and two TDs (two interceptions) for Morris Brown (2-4), while Jones caught eight passes for 152 yards and two scores. Rod Perrymond had 44 yards on 16 carries for Morris Brown. 1 OK 1 1 Vl07 Ma rJ. nrlw GREENBRIAR MALL RICH'S i LAWRENCEVILLE lBy Celeste E. Whittaker STAFF WRITER Morris Brown coach Joe Crosby didn't allow his team to watch the game film from last week's loss at Alabama He wanted to let the past stay in the past, and begin a "new" season with this week's game against Miles College. That strategy worked as the Wolverines scored 25 fourth-quarter points, including the game-winning 31-yard pass from Jerome Weaks to Brelon Jones with eight seconds remaining, to seal a 32-30 upset win over the SIAC's top team before a homecoming crowd of 7,527 at Hern-don Stadium. After Miles (4-2) turned the ball over on downs with about 50 seconds left at the Morris Brown 36, the five-play, 64-yard game-winning scoring drive was set up.

"When it's just 50 seconds left in the game, it's kind of easy to think you've got it made, especially when you come in here 4-1," Crosby said. "They can play, 'IBS70M3 ECONOMY ALL UGHT TRUCK r- passes for 84 yards, while Chris Whisenhunt had 174 yards on 27 carries. Miles scored first off a Morris Brown miscue. Henry Boynton's punt attempt was blocked by Joseph Cordell, and 6-foot-2, 245-pound linebacker Robert Coker rumbled in one yard for the score with 13:21 left in the opening quarter. Two series later, the Wolverines used a fake punt attempt on fourth-and-11 from the Miles 45, which resulted in a 30-yard gain by Nate Wright, to help them get on the board.

Five plays later, Weaks scored on the one-yard keeper as Morris Brown went up by one (7-6) with 6:34 left. Two Miles penalties aided the drive.
