The 25-year-old Kramer (1-1) earned his first career win, striking out eight and walking none in an impressive audition for a permanent job in the Indians' shaky rotation. "It just set in. I came one pitch from a perfect game," Kramer said.

"All I can say is: Wow!" Kramer faced 28 hitters, one over the minimum, and teammate Paul Sorrento backed him with two home runs, his 10th and lith of the year. In his previous five appearances, all in relief, Kramer gave up no runs in 10 innings. He had made his first career start May 4 against California and allowed three runs and four hits in four innings. He has made 17 appearances this year and 21 in his career, all but two of them in relief. Before Monday, the righthander from Cincinnati had never pitched longer than four innings in the big leagues.

But he shackled a Texas team that entered the game ranked third in the American League in runs scored. Kramer retired the Rangers' first 10 batters before Franco hit a 412-foot shot to center, his fourth home run, on a 1-1 pitch in the fourth. His next time up, Franco struck out. BLUE JAYS 4, BREWERS I In Toronto, Devon White hit two home runs and Dave Stewart gave up two hits in seven innings, leading the Jays to their fifth straight victory. White hit Mike Boddicker's first pitch of the game over the fence in right for a 1-0 lead.

It was the 18th time in his career that White has led off a game with a homer. White's two-homer game was the fourth of his career. Stewart (1-1) got his first win after allowing 10 runs in 1 innings in his last start. "I found my release point today and my mechanics were good for the first time," Stewart said. RED SOX 6, TIGERS 5 Scott Cooper hit a two-out triple in the 10th inning and scored on Bob Zupcic's double in Boston's victory in Detroit.

Cooper was credited with a triple after the ball scooted past center fielder Milt Cuyler's diving attempt at a shoestring catch. He scored when Zupcic doubled off Bob MacDonald (3-2). ORIOLES 8, YANKEES 6 Cal Ripken in a slump much of the season, led off the seventh inning with a tie-breaking home run in Baltimore's victory in New York. Ripken's homer stalled a Yankees comeback that included a pair of home runs by Kevin Maas, erasing a 6-1 Orioles lead. Maas's home runs included a three-run shot off Rick Sutcliffe (5-2) that capped a four-run sixth to tie the score at 6.

Ripken, batting .209 with three homers entering the game, opened the seventh by driving a 2-2 pitch from Andy Cook (0-1) over the left-center field wall to make it 7-6.
