That bicycle riding Is popular In Springfield was proven beyond a doubt yesterday morning when, in plte of the heavy rain and hall that fell, mora than 193 riders assembled at White City park where the much heralded Safety Bicycle parade waa to be held. Owlus to tha mt of the ground permission waa obtained to hold the activities on Hovey avenue directly back of the field Over 1,000 pacta tors followed the riders, and for the whole block; men women, boys and girls lined both aides of the street. Many of the riders had dec ora tea Dines, and the spectacle presented by the gay colors of ths wheels and the costumes of some of the riders nude It a colorful gathering. Bicycle enthusiasm ran high for more than two hours while Fred et. Onge of New York City gave a eafety first demonstration and directed several spirited contests. Mr. St, Onge opened the program with a practical lesson of safety.

He rode his bicycle In tha wrong manner and the correct way, showing how boys and girls can prevent accidents. He advised the use of bell or horn and a lamp for night riding. Riders were warned of the dangers of cutting corners and otherwise reckless riding habits in congested streets. The ssfety lesson met with ths approval of those pres ent and Bt, Onge waa given a great hand. Every school In the elty was repre sented, but.lt was up to Jarrett Junior High school to carry off.

the Cycle Trades Trophy Cup offered to the school with the greatest number of riders. Prof. Pinnell, one the teschers at Jarrett, received tha cup amid great cheering. Tha 60 yard scooter raoa waa a "humdinger," with 19 starters. Handicapped according to ages, Jack Mart ee of Fairbanks school, six years of age, outdistanced the others and got first place.
