Disposing of his lnter ts In thnt field, he organized a'Ul for a time president of the Fprlnrfleld Camly Co. loiter, he was In charge of the boardlns of all employes of the Frisco system to whom the road furnished meals. Vpon the consolidation of the Frisco nnd Memphis he and Q. W. Horton, formerly general engineer for the Memphis lines, entered the lumbering business near the town of Pine Top.

In Taney county. They bought 4,000 acres of nine laml nnd a. saw mill from Georse Puller, but later sold their holdings to a St. Liouls company organized by William H. Johnsort.

It was while lumbering In Taney county and along the Black river in Arkansas that Mr. Duw kel obtained much of his Information as to the Ozark section. Then, too, as a tmvellng man, he had even greater opportunity tn become acquainted vllh the people. "Conditions for the traveling man who makes the Oiarks have changed greatly In the past several years." Mr. Dunckel said.

"And these changes have been along all lines. "In the early davs, the salesman traveled horseback, and carried his samples In In one of the baes he carried samples of coffee, supnr, awd a few other necessaries. In the other saddlebags he carried of whisker. Those Were the days when all wholesale houses carried liquor lrr stock, and the liquor sales furnished the bulk of their buBinis. "Then came the days when the traveling men made their rounds In one of the Jess Pturiy bungles, behind a team of strong horses.

Those buggies were wonderful. They were built with fol i wheels and hlsh axles, because the stumps were numerous nnd the ruts were deep. Many a man has driven one of those buiroleB a' couple of years without having any repairs. "But those days ore past. The stumps and ruts are nono from the roads, evero the country lanes through much of the realnn have been graded, anil the Ford Is the conveyance for the mam who peddles his waif wwiiig the hills.

"Bridges, too, have been put ln4 across practically all the Btreams. If they hadn't been, even a Ford wouldn't b9 of much service, es i pecially in ihs spring. Commenting on the people who dwelt among the Ozarks in the early days, Mr, Dunckel salJ that many were rough and ready, but that they possessed and lived up to a high code of honor all their own. "They might make a little whls he explained, "or, if they needed meat, they might bhoot a hog. But It was only within the past few years that a traveling man has been robbed In tho Ozarks And even ni.w, such incidents are rare, Indeed.

"Not many years ago," Mr. Dunckel continued, "whenever a traveling salesman returned to Springfield at this time ot the year, he bi ought with him a piece of venison1 or two or three turkeys. Nobody bothered shooting Quail or squlriels, because they were too small. Mr. Dunckel generally throughout the Oxark region la credited with being more fumlllur than anyone else with the Missouri noun' dawg song.

"I have been told that the song originated In the vicinity of For syth," be said. "The story Is that a farmer, who lived out from town a piece, was the possessor of a hound that was about aa poor as his owner and that he was forced to range far and Aide to obtain enough to eat "One day this farmer and his son, Llge, went to Forsyth. As usual, the hound accompanied them. "During the visit, the boy and the dug got lost from the farmr, and then from each other. The dog followed its usual custom of foraelng, and was run out ot practically every kitchen In Forsyth.

"Ftnally, some of the town boys began to abuse the dog, as it was skulking about the square. Llge sawe the affair and started to protect his dog. He had a fight with one tf the town boys, and was Just finishing giving him a good licking when the sheriff appeared and started to take him to Jail. "The farmer appeared on the scene about that time and ambled over. Whufgth' matter.

Lige'" he demanded, and the boy, crying like a whipped baby, answered: 'Ev'ry time I come town, th' boys keep klcklry my dawg aroun'. Taln't no dlffrunce ef he Is a houn', they gotta quit klckln' my dawg "The boy rave the words of the song as we have heard It and his sobbing supplied the tune. Peonle In Forsyth took up the words and tune, and It wasn't lonur nntll the song was a classic of the hills.
