I HOLLYWOOD, May 24- Universal-International has made a second production financing and distribution arrangement with Bryna Productions.

The independent company, owned by Kirk Douglas, will film the Howard Fast novel, "Spartacus," with a cast to be headed by Sir Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton and Douglas. Sir Laurence also will diivcl the picture which, according to Universal, will be budgeted at 000,000. Last week Bryna and Universal announced they would jointly sponsor an adventure drama en titled "Vivo Gringo," co-starring Rock Hudson, who is under con tract to Universal, and Douglas. This one will not be made until next year. Filming of "Spartacus," an historical-romantic drama about a slave who leads a rebellion rounded up Inspector Fix (Robert Newton) the Princess Aouda (Shirley Mac-Laine, and Passepartout (Cantinflas) for a game, which was broken up when hostile Indians staged an attack on the train.

Phineas Fogg, the intrepid traveler of "Around the World in 80 Days," now showing at the McCook theater, never misses an opportunity for a game of whist. While speeding across the wild and woolly plains of the U. S. west, he hall into a modern theater But, there is every Indication that the county commissioners intend to stay with the job until It is. Since the re- furbished hall with its facelifting was opened to' tlie public a year and half ago it has housed nearly every form of rta i nient extant.

When the at- Mitchell traction was musical orchestral or vocal it was entirely atisfao tory. But. the sDoken word was something else. In spite of the installation of a $13,000 sound system there were times when the speaker could not be heard in some parts of the hall there have been so-called "dtfad spots" where this condl tion was the rule rather, than the exception. In the remit wtaglng of No Shortage.

Of Playwrights NEW YORK-(T)-Writing for the stage is a highly popular cross-country occupation, the American Playwrights Guild reports. The orcamzauon. formed a year ago to help new playwrights in preparation of scripts for IVondway and television, has made a survey of its correspond once, found hopeful authors in 37 states. The guild found the greatest activity in New York State, followed by Illinois and then Pennsylvania. More than 800 scripts have becii examined, with a 55 per cent majority of authors preferring to write for the theater rather than television.

i "Auntie Mame," It was particularly noticeable. Some patrons reported they could hoar satisfactorily. Others said they could hoar very Utile of the dialog. The latter far outnumbered the former. This past week county commissioners ordered a study of the condition and authorized necessary steps to correct it.

Repre sentatives of the contracting firm, the architect and the sound engineering company, after sur veying the problem, believe they have the answer. Work of installing new baffle plates on stage and acoustical tile on the walls of the balcony got under way immediately. This, it is believed, will provide better projection of voices from Hie stage and correct an echo condition. IT IS THE opinion of these men that this will remedy the situa tion. It is to be hoped such is the case.

If this is not the answer, it is likewise to be hoped that other steps will be taken within the next month. Jutot three weeks from next Tuesday, the Paul Winston Musical theater opens its season. In ordinary circumstances it would seem essential to provide the group with favorable conditions under which to present their attractions. Circumstances being not ex actly "ordinary" in this case it would seem even more desirable to furnish Winston with satisfactory facilities. The Winston enterprise has been a center of conflicting feel ings since its inception.

There is optimism in some quarters, pessimism in others about the quality of the product to be offered. In any event, the Winston organization deserves to have every opportunity to do a good job. If the physical characteristics of the hall are not up to par it certainly would be a handicap of considerable proportion. SIR LAURENCE and Douglas will work together for the first time this summer as costars with Burt Lancaster in "The Devil's Disciple," a joint production by Hccht-Hill-Lancaster and Bryna for United Artists. The George Bernard Shaw comedy-melodrama is to go before the camera in England in July.

"Spartacus" is the second novel by Fast to be purchased by the movies since the author an-, nounced that he had broken with the Communist party in 1957. His novel, "My Glorious Brothers," was bought last December by Stanley Kramer, another independent producer. "Spartacus" is to be brought out in this country in the fall by Crown publishers.
