MORE 18 ASKED POINT OF LAW IS INVOLVED At a special called meeting of the city council and board of works Tuesday evening, the proposition of granting aa increase of 325 a month to the city firemen and police was discussed.

All of the city officials expressed them selves as favoring the raine, saying i that without doubt the men deserved it, by reason of the Increased cost of living. The only thing standing In the way of the increase wss the fact of the existence of a state law, which provides thst the salaries of public officers cannot be increased during the term of office. 8umner Kenner, city attorney however expressed the belief that this could be evsded. The police and firemen are appointed by the board of works, and the power to accept their resignations Is also held by the board. The entire force of the police and Are departments could resign, and be reemployed by the board at the increased wsges, according to Mr.

Kenner, since no specific term of office Is understood. i Fay Not Adequate It has been realised for sometime that the pay which the members of the police and fire departments re ceiving la not adequate in comparison to the wages which are being paid by the factories and other industries. Within the laflt few weeks, JanVes PaW fire has 'been" kept 'busy hunting up men to fill the positions left vacant by the many resignations which have been tendered by firemen, and It is believed that this condition would beoome more acute as the scarcity of labor becomes greater due to the number of men taken by the draft. No action was taken by the council or the board of works Tuesdsy evening, but It is believed that the increase will be granted, to start with the first of the year, at the meeting of the council next Tuesday evening. The resignation of E.

W. Balzer, councilman from the second ward was received and placed on file. Mr. Balzer recently moved to LaPorte, and so cannot now represent the cltisens of the second ward. A new councn member will be elected at the regular meeting of the city council next Tues day.
