PEI MID POLICE MAT GET CITY OFFICIALS FAVOR GRANT W0) HAI8I $25 A MONTH MORE IS ASKED POINT OF LAW IS INVOLVED At.

a special called meeting of the elty oouncll and board of works Tuesday evening, the proposition ot granting an Increase of $25 a month to the city firemen and police was discussed. All of the city officials expressed them selves as favoring the raise, saying that without doubt the men deserved It, by reason of the Increased cost of living. The only thing standing In the way of the increase was the fact of the existence of a state law, which provides that the salaries of public officers cannot be increased during the term of office. 8umner Kenner, city attorney howerer expressed the belief that this could be evaded. The police and firemen are appointed by the board of works, and the power to accept their reslgnatlona Is also held by the board.

The entire force of the police and fire departments could resign, and be re employed by the board at the Increased wages, according to Mr. Kenner, alnce no specific term of i office is understood. Fay Net Adequate It has bsen realised for some time that the pay which the members of the police and fire departments receiving Is not adequate In comparison to the wagea which are being paid by the factories and other Industries. v. "Within the last" few" weeks, Jantea Paul, fire chief has been kept busy hunting up men to fill the positions left vacant by the many resignations which have been tendered by firemen, and It la believed that this condition would beoome more acute as the scarcity of labor becomes greater due to the number of men taken by the draft.

No action was taken by the council or the board of works Tuesday even ing, but It Is believed that the Increase will be granted, to start with the first of the year, at the meeting of the council next Tuesday evening. The resignation of E. W. Balzer, councilman from the second ward was received and placed on file. Mr.

Balzer recently moved to LaPorte, and so cannot now represent the cltliens of the second ward. A new councn member will be elected at the regular meeting of the city council next Tues day. About 200 board feet is required to the average airplane. To get this material It la necessary to work over about 1,500 feet of select lumber. This may represent all that can be used for airplanes in 15.000 board futt of standing timber.
