JOE SMITH'S NEW PEEPiNG SIOXE. learn fram the most indisputable authority that Joe has found a new peeping slone, the circumstances of this discovery are ruth-er cuiious, and we give them as leceived. He was walking out some evenings -ago with a lately, ('or woman which ever you please,) when suddenly he darted aside and leaped into a cellar, when he presently cried out "how come 1 here?" shall 1 get cut?" The lady with this seized him and raised him as though Hie had a child. Jue then stated the miraculous manner of his being drawn by the power of God into the cellar and to the very spot where laid the stone, which he says has the retimi kabie property of enabling him to translate unknown language, and discover the place where treasures are hidden. Look out for miracles soon Joe no doubt intends to find lots of money before long that for months have been lying by him.

Warsaw Signal. The Montreal Messenger notices the receipt of a hitter from one of the men who were transported to New South Wales for participation in the Canadian nisuriccti.il. 'Ihewrtcr stated the treatment of the prisoners is more and more marked by clemency, and hat they were full of hope th at the Goverment intended to allow them to return to their homes. The Managers, and Officers of the Philadelphia and Heading Railroad passed over the line of their road from Reading to Potlsville, on Saturday the 1st instant, returning at ten minutes past 2 o'clock P. M.

They started from Pottsville for Philadelphia and arrived at Peters' Island Bridge ten minutes before P. M. Total time, including stoppages, 5 hours and 40 minutes; lolal running time 4 hours and 48 minutes. Awful Calamity. A private letter received yesterday details an account at the town of Jackson, Louisiania, which appauls one's very soul.

It is one of the most cuiious as well as the most heart rending we have ever heard of. A dray loaded with several kegs of powder was beinsr discharged, when the carelessi.ess (some say drunkeness) of draymen, one ot them was surlered to fall. A scissors grinder was near, busy in his avocation, and his rapid wheel emitting a shower of sparks. These fell upon the spilled powder, blew up the man, scissors, grinder, horse ami dray, and killed four negroes belonging to Seth Pin ker. The shock was felt all over the town, and many windows were broken.

One leg of the draymen, and his hat were found several yards off. The mangled remains of the scissors grindet were collected and decently burried. His wheel it appears had been sent about sixty yards, and lodged on a balcony of a neighboring house. When will people learn to be careful with powder. IS.

O. Cresent. OUTRAGE. During the late 'strike' on the Troy and Schenectady rail road, and Erie canal, several of the rioters having1 learned one night that there were two irishmen lately arrived in the country who had been at work during the day at th usual wages, broke into the shariiy where they were sleeping at one o'clock in the moining.and beat them with clubs and oilier weapons nHTe most savage manner. One of the persons attacked died the same day of his wounds; his skull being nct.ually broken to pieces! The other is elill unable to walk but hopes aie entertained of his recovery.

Tiie murderers have not been arresied. Why is this? Are such villians to go "un-whipt of Troy Whig. The Springfield Mass. Republican states, that in less than four weeks, about eleven hundred have Hgned the Washing tonian pledge that the prospect of the temperance movement there was never so auspicious as at pres ent. I heltepubhcan turther states, that there now is a probability that nearly all the ci uens of the village will ign the pledge.

A recent case of allcdered murder on board of an American s'lip was brought before the London magistrates, wno discharged the prisoner, and referred the case to the American consul.
