As a result, nothing in this film is as scary as the Wicked Witch in "Snow White" or Monstro the Whale in and the PG rating seems too strong. Animation this powerful could communicate any emotion the directors wanted. Countless flying dragons have appeared on Saturday-morning televisioni Not one has moved with the savagery of the Gwythaints, the Horned King's pterodactyl-like messengers. The sequence in which they snatch Hen Wen from Taran provides the most sensational moment in the film. And instead of relying solely on John Byner's droll vocal performance to make Gurgi a funny character, the animators use gestures and body language to create a vivid and entertaining personality.

The spectacle and fireworks in "The Black Cauldron" suggest that Disney is finally attempting to answer the challenge of Lucas, Spielberg et reasserting the power of animation to realize the most extravagant visions. The pyrotechnics at the creation of the Cauldron-born warriors eclipse anything in "Indiana Jones," because the animation creates a world in which the fantastic seems plausible. Now all the Disney animators need is a script equal to their talents. In his adventures, Taran joins forces with the spunky Princess Eilonwy, traveling bard Fflewddur Fflam and a funny, furry creature named Gurgi. Together, they must face not only the Horned King and his henchmen but the oddball witches Orddu, Orgoch and Orwen and the Fair Folk, a troop of fairies who look like escapees from a cereal -for-kiddies commercial.

Like Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," Alexander's fantasies are somber, and powerful. Prydain Is a land where evil is black and terrible and virtue shines brightly. But directors Ted Berman and Richard Rich hedge their material as if they were afraid of it. Whenever the action begins to build suspense or fear, they dissipate the tension by introducing some sort of comic relief. The terror and might the Horned King should radiate are destroyed by the distracting presence of Creeper, his giggling little familiar.

In one scene without Creeper, the Horned King's speech to the skeletons that will become his deathless soldiers shows just how memorable a villain he could have been. The sight of his monstrous shadow looming on the walls and piles of bones is chillingly powerful. Orddu, Orgoch and Orwen, Alexander's potent and terrible Fate figures, have been reduced to such knockabout comics that it's difficult to believe they possess the powers they invoke to resolve the story. The highly dimensional sound track, with its opulent Elmer Bernstein score and excellent vocal performances, is a technological work of art. But it is the animation itself with some of the best work the studio has produced since Walt Disney's death in 1966 that dazzles the viewer. The subtle, nu-anced motions of these characters will come as a revelation to audiences bored with the medium after enduring hours with the Care Bears and their smarmy friends. If its script and direction were equal to the animation, "Cauldron" would be a masterpiece to rank with "Snow White" and "Pinoc-chio," instead of the frustrating, beautiful, exciting and ultimately unsatisfying film thai it is.

"Caufdron" represents the culmination of 12 years of labor: Executives and artists came and went from the Disney studios while it was in production. The $25-mil-lion budget makes it the most expensive feature in the history of animation. The film is based on parts of Lloyd Alexander's "The Chronicles of Prydain," a popular series of juvenile novels derived from Welsh legends. The episodic narrative gives the impression of having passed through many, many hands (nine writers have story credit, plus seven for "additional story contributions" and two for "additional Taran, the young hero, finds himself drawn into the war to keep the evil Horned King from obtaining the Black Cauldron, an enchanted weapon that changes the bodies of dead soldiers into an army of deathless ghoul-warriors. Hen Wen, Taran's pig, has oracular powers that could lead the king to the cauldron.
