Butler, for 5,000, to Capt. Machell, whose horses will be under the care of George Bloss. Rising Sun, Brian Bora, and Spruce, have been sent to the Cape of Good Hope. Retirement op Lord Stamford. With much regret we announce the retirement of Lord Stamford from the Turf.

A draft of his lordship's horses were advertised for sale during the Houghton week, but in consequence of the determination of their noble owner to give up racing altogether, the sale was put off, and the entire stud will be offered at auction by Messrs. Tattersall, the first week in December. We understand that, on Monday, his Lordship sent a peremptory order to Joseph Dawson, his late trainer, to deliver up every horse and all effects belonging to him, and twenty-five of the horses were sent to William Butler's as many as the latter could accommodate. The remainder, including Limosina, were sent to Johnny Daley's. These proceedings have greatly disturbed the repose of Newmarket, but the readers of this journal may have been prepared for something of the kind.

At Worcester, on Tuesday, it was currently reported that Mr Naylor had given 25,000 for Lord Stamford's stud, which includes all the horses in training, saddles, cloths, bridles. 4c. We cannot vouch for the strict accuracy of the statement that Mr Naylor has purchased the lot, but we are informed positively that Godding had a distinct commission to purchase Lord Stamford's team, if thev could be bought for 30,000 I Death or Playman. This clever hunter and steeplechaser, the property of Mr. Arthur Yates, of Bishops Sutton Hants, dropped down dead in the hunting field on Saturday last.

He was bred by Mr. John Scott in 1850. Mr. J. Anderson has sold Yorkshire Grey to Mr.

Arthur Yates, for a long figure. Mr. Abel purchased Cowley at Newmarket for 100 sovs and subsequently sold him to Mr. Savile for 120 gs. Mr.

Minteringham has sold his Derby colt, Appenine, to Mr. W. Robertson, according to report, for 2,500 guineas, and it is said he will go into William Day stable- Edwards. We understand that Lord Stamford still continues his retainer to this jockey, in order to have the first call of his services should he ever return to the turf. Durham Racecourse.

The race committee are making extensive alterations and improvements on the course They are sparing no expense in levelling it in those parts where it was highly necessary, and when completed the course wiU not only be much safer, but rendered one of the best in the north. It is estimated that the cost of these improvements will be between 200 and 300. The work is being executed by Mr. John Gowland. the Handicap for the Nursery Stakes 13 C11 WM put at the toP wel8ht' 1 than 8st 131b being imposed on him.

The circumstance created much surprise in Claremont's stable, and great indignation was expressed at it by ail the employers; so much so that a noble lord who trains at Whitewall represented to Admiral Rous the gross insult that had been offered to Mr Bowes, one of the oldest members of the Jockey Club, in handicapping his horse as if he had been a party to some robbery. This idea was immediately repudiated by the Admiral, who said he had nothing to do with the weight in question, which was fixed by Mr. C. Alexander, the junior steward, who justified it by the suspicious manner in which Claremont was ridden at the First October Meeting. The nobleman to whom we refer replied that nothing would justify such an inference as far as Mr Bowes or his trainer were concerned, and for the future he should decline having his own horses handicapped.

Pedbstriaxism. Lasg v. Time. The great undertaking of William Lang, of Middlesbrough, to run one mile in four minutes fifteen seconds, the backer of time laying 50 to 25, came off on Friday, Oct. 30, at Newmarket, in the presence of a large attendance of admirers of pedeatrianism.

Lang, who was born at Stockton-on-Tees, is 25 years of age in December next he stands 5ft. 8jin. in height, and weighs in racing costume lOst 21b. He is a remarkably well-built young man, with very tine chest, broad shoulders, good back, hips, and loins, muscular thighs, and fine-shaped legs, with great ability to use them. At about half-past nine o'clock, a.m., he appeared at the scratch, starting on tfaa Cunbridgo lurupike-road and finishing in the town, facing the Betting-Rooms and, in eonsequenc of the racing having been fixed to commence at ten, no time was lost in adjusting the preliminaries.

At the signal given Lang bounded away at a splitting pace, taking extraordinary long, lurching strides, and, to the astonishment of almost every one, he completed bis arduous undertaking in four minutes two seconds. He ran the first quarter of a mile in 55 seconds, the second quarter in 59 seconds, the third in 62 seconds, and the whole distance in four minutes two seconds. The ground was very level the first half mile, but towards the close down hill. He appeared much distressed at the finish. NEWMARKET MEETINGS, 1864.

June 7. TROTTING MAiCH AT MIDDLESBROUGH. On Monday last, Nov. 2nd, an interesting and exciting trotting match came off on the Marton Road, for a small stake, between Mr Layton's black mare, 36 years of age, and Mr J. Harrison's bay horse, 6 years old.

Although the weather was very wet and cold, still at the appointed time both representatives put in a bold front, determined not to be defeated. They trotted down to the starting-post, which was arranged to be Mr Bolckow's Lodge-gates, and the first over Newlaads Bridge, being a distance of nearly two miles, to be the winner. The usual stipulations being mutually on as to side of road, and in case of either animal breaking his pilot was to immediately stop, and start afresh. At the word go," off they bounded at the rate of ten miles an hour for the first half mile, neither having the advantage, until a man on a grey horse, without a saddle caused the horse to break, which of course gave a great advantage to the mare. However they got together again, the horsemen keeping back, when again the horse broke, consequently Mr Layton won.

They both trotted in harness, Mr Layton weighing 18st, and Mr Harrison 16st. Nothing could exceed the coolness with which the winner was piloted throughout the race. SALE OF HLJSTJfiRS, AT TATTERSALL'S ON MONDAY LAST. mWStMmKrv. Psntoa Tuesday fl iuuiwsj Friday Thoniy Saturday HARRIERS.

Lord Uxbridge's by Lambton, out of Heart of Oak's dam Duke of Beaufort's Helice THE LIVERPOOL MEETING. WRITTEN EXPRESSLY FOR THIS PAPER. 1 The Worcester Autumnal Meeting was not altogether successful, for the recent heavy rains had partially flooded the course, and at one time it was doubtful whether the races would be run off As it was the Hurdle Race had to be postponed until the second day. The Worcester Handicap, as we anticipated, proved a gift for Summer-side, who, despite the favour shown Pearl Diver, won in a canter by three lengths. No less than 17 started for the Nursery Plate, and Flatterer, not backed for a shilling, was declared the winner by a head, after a most exciting contest with Deerstalker.

In the Handicap Stakes Despair brought back some of his noble owner's Cambridgeshire losses by winning easily, and upsetting a great favourite in Alchymist. The other events were unimportant, and require no comment. The Liverpool Autumn Meeting will be held next week, and is likely to be a most successful one, for though the Great Autumn Cup has this year obtained only a very poor acceptance, 26, nevertheless as there are many horses of note engaged, the result is likely to be regarded with great interest, and no doubt before the day there will be some brisk speculation. At present very "few have been invested on but from the information we have been able to obtain we think there will be about twelve starters selected from the following list of probable starters and jockeys 1. Fairwater Custance.

2. Croagh Patrick Fordham. 8. Balaam Judd. 4.

Catch'em Alive J. Adams. 6. Camerino 6. Donnybrook E.

Taylor. 7. Somersault 8. Blithfield 9. Earl of Surrey 10.

Golden Pledge 11. Baldwin Hibberd. 12. Chaff IS. Trap 14- Muezzin Barrett.

Fairwater heads the list with 8et 121b. This mare won the Northamptonshire Stakes with 8st 101b, and ran third in the Newmarket Handicap with 9st 31b, and she has on other occasions this season run well with high weights. There is no doubt about her staying qualities, and as she is very fit we can hardly see what is to defeat her. 8he, at any rate, has all the heavy weights safe, including Croagh Patrick, Balham, and Aurelian. W.

Day has accepted with Catch'em Alive, Somersault, and Muezzin. The winner of the Cambridgeshire will have 111b more weight to carry on the present occasion, and is moreover no glutton at distance. We hear Somersault will be the selected of the stable. He is well in, but bis antecedents are not good enough to place any confidence in him. Balham and Trumps represent the Danebury stable, and the latter has been rather freely backed but it remains to be seen whether he can stay a distance.

Balham is only at home in deep ground. H. Goater 'a lot comprise Golden Pledge, Baldwin, Gardener, and Lady of the Isles. Golden Pledge at the time of inditing these fines is first favourite but we have an idea that Baldwin will be the Simon Pure on the day. Blithefleld with 6st 121b ran fourth for the Cesarewitch and is almost certain to be placed.

Earl of Surrey is turned loose, but he must improve on his Lincoln running to have any chance here. He belongs to a clever division, and this may be one of their good things. We shall keep him on the safe side. For the rest we have no fancy and in taking three to stand on against the field, we must select Fairwater, Earl of Surrey, and Blithfield, and shall anticipate the judge's award thus FAIRWATER i BLITHFIELD a EARL OF SURREY 8 The Sefton Handicap looks a good thing for Comet or Baldwin. The most formidable lot in the Flying Stakes are Tarragona, Queen Elizabeth, and Bolero whilst Pearl Diver ought to win the Aintree Plate.

PILOT. BETTING AT TATTERS ALL'S. Monday As anticipated, the attendance this afternoon was unusually large, and in consequence of the wet weather the members were compelled to confine themselves within the narrow limits of the subscription room. During the greater portion of the afternoon locomotion was almost impossible, and the squeezing and elbowing which had to be endured in the course of business was anything but pleasant, and made every one wish for the speedy completion of the New Tattersall's" at Knightsbridge. The settling on the past Houghton Meeting and the Cambridgeshire in particular was carried on as well as could be expected under the circumstances and although enormous sums of money changed hands, a few complaints were heard, "not of absentees, but of the difficulty of effecting a settlement with some of the agents," owing to the multiplicity of accounts the latter had entrusted to them.

It was currently rumoured on Saturday last that one of the large al fresco speculators would not be in his place to meet the demands that would be made upon him for his liberties" with Catch'em Alive. In the City on Monday morning the report received further confirmation by bis non-appearance, and at Hyde-park Corner it was announced that, notwithstanding the state of siege in Oxford-street, the Hyde-park Ranger" had run the blockade, and made for some friendly port. With this single exception there was no defection from the ranks of the subscribers to Tattersall's, and although several were hard hit," they met their liabilities with a readiness and punctuality worthy of the turf in its best days. There was scarcely any betting, the only transactions that came nnder our notice being 20 to 1 each about Coup d'Etat and Blair Athbl, and 1,000 to 30 about Historian, for the Derby.
