14 Part IllMonday, October IS, 1984 Eos Angeles Slimes WORLD SERIES '84 Are Those Good Days Now Gone Forever? For Mickey Lolich, the Year of the Tiger Will Always Be 1968, Not 1984 Help is here for the besieged Bushmills drinker. Mm? Here are some tried-and-truc answers to the endless, tedious questions that novices always seem to ask Bushmills drinkers: "I'm sorry you never heard of it." "Vu drink it like scotch, but its smoother." "It's triple-distilled." "It's imported from the oldest distillery in the world." "It's my kind of drink." "Order one for yourself and stop bothering me." jar- "e-? fwi" mS i jjj I Wi il i fvft i mm a RIVIERA EXPRESS TO LAS VEGAS Associated Fress VINCE COMPAGNONE Los Angeles Times By GORDON EDES, Times Staff Writer LAKE ORION, do you make a good doughnut?" Mickey Lolich said, repeating a question, as he emptied a tray of doughnuts into a vat of oil. "With tender loving care. There are certain things you can do to make a doughnut fast use extra yeast, extra hot water but that doesn't do much for the doughnut. "I do things the old-fashioned way slow." It is a Sunday morning in Lake Orion, about an hour's drive north from Detroit, and a busy time in Lolich's Donut and Pastry Shop.

From state Highway 24, which slices past the high school and the K-mart on its way through town, the shop is easy to spot, even in the fog obscuring the trees in their late -autumn splendor. The shop stands between a dry cleaners and the post office, and is marked by the 20-foot baseball bat and the ball inscribed with Lolich's name "There's a couple of churches just a half-mile from here," Lolich said. "Services ought to be letting out soon." Lolich is here six days a week, arriving each morning while it is still dark. Four days a week, he bakes doughnuts. On two days, he bakes fancy pastries.

On this Sunday, Lolich planned to put away his apron early. He was headed to Tiger Stadium, where the Tigers were attempting to clinch their first World Series title in 16 years. The last time the Tigers won, in 1968, Lolich pitched the clincher, beating Bob Gibson of the Cardinals in the seventh game. It was Lolich's third win of the Series and made him a World Series hero. This time, Lolich won't even be able to see the mound.

"I'm sitting behind third base in the upper deck, the last row from the top," said Lolich, who hadn't been at a ballgame for three years until the Series. "I'm behind a pole. Courtesy seats from the Tigers that I paid for. Up there, it's the pigeons, me and Bob Uecker." Lolich was in the same seat on Saturday, when the stadium message board flashed a trivia question about a pitcher who had played for Through the years, his feats in the 1 968 World given former Tiger pitcher Mickey Lolich, now Series, when he won three games from the St. 43, plenty to talk about with customers at his Louis Cardinals (final out, left), have always doughnut shop (right) in Lake Orion, Mich.

"Everybody sitting around me wanted me to stand up and wave, to let people know where I was," said Lolich, who finished his playing career in San Diego. "But I was very embarrassed. People wanting to know why I was sitting where I was sitting. "I was a pretty good ballplayer in my day.

Yet I walk by one of our minor league scouts, one of the all-time flunkies, a guy who probably made $4,000 a year, and he's sitting behind home plate. But they (the Tigers) would probably say, 'Well, he's been with us for 30 "I'm glad today's the last day." A young father carrying his son approaches Lolich, who has come out from the kitchen in the back to chat with some visitors drinking coffee. The child, who can't be older than 4, shyly holds out a picture for Lolich to sign. "What's your Lolich cisKs. "R-Y-A-N, Ryan," the child answers.

In the parking lot, the father says he's from Bay City, on the tip of Saginaw Bay. "We saw the sign," he says, "and just had to stop." On the wall behind the counter, there is a picture of Lolich pitching. Inside a glass display case, there is Lolich's Tiger jersey, his cap, spikes, glove and a ball. On a shelf, there is a replica of a World Series trophy that Lolich had made in the late 70s. "I figured why not? I owed it to myself to get something out of that Series," Lolich said.

"I kept the baseball, the bat which I hit the home run with (Game 2 of the Series, off Nelson Briles), the glove, the uniform, all of it. I don't know why. "It's sad, really, and ironic that I pitched 16 years in the big leagues, won 217 games, set major league strikeout records and all the stuff I did, and the only thing anyone remembers is that I won three games." Now, Lolich bakes doughnuts. Has been for the last five years. "It was totally an accident," he said.

While with the Tigers, Lolich had become friendly with the owner of a doughnut shop where he often stopped, and the man had urged him to become a partner. When Lolich retired, in 1979, he made the investment in a shop in nearby Rochester, with the understanding that his partner operate the business. Then, problems. "My partner was as crooked as Jesse James, if Jesse James was crooked," Lolich said. "I bought him out.

A week later, he died of a massive heart attack." Eventually, Lolich lost his lease, but a little more than a year ago, he built the shop here. "How do you like our little hick town?" Lolich asked with a smile. Please see LOLICH, Page 20 FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9, 1984 RIVIERA us vegas CALL (702) 734-5110 far ticket information 'All trip prices are plus 15 tax and services.
