The National Convention of temperance men met at Saratoga on Tuesday Inst, and opened the business with about four hundred delegates in attendance from all patts of the country.

A correspondent of the Journal of Commerce fur nishes an account of its organization. Chancellor Walworth was chosen the President, and most of the first day was spent in hearing re sorts of the wonderful reform of drunkards communicatra oy delegates rrom Boston, new York, 'New Havtn and other cities and some speeches from the reformed men themselves. In the evening tier was a meeting of not less than three thousand persona in the green beyond the Congress spring the churches not being sufficiently large to contain the people who wished to assemble. The meeting was ably addressed by Rev. Mr.

Scott, of Sweden, Rev. John Pie pool, of Boston, Mr. Pottard, of Baltimore, and General 8mith, of Peterboro, and was one of great interest. Other meetings were to be held. On Thursday morning a fire occurred in New York, commencing in a three story building, occupied by a cabinet maker and a piano maker. The build ing was owned by R. Cornell, and with its con tents was entirely destroyed. The following houses were alto burnt to the ground. No.

64 Vestry Street, owned by Mr. Cornell, and occu pied as cabinet maker's shop. No. 46, owned and occupied by Mrs. Prall, and No.

49, owned and occupied by Mr. Carpenter. The furniture of these bouses was mostly saved. Two frame Buildings in the rear of Greenwich street, with their contents, were also wholly consumed by the flames. ao Natiohal American Society or Acriccl ture An address to the friends of a National American 8ocfety of Agriculture has been pub lished in the Wesleyan Intelligencer.

The ob ject of the address is to ascertain whether a suf ficient number of persons are willing to lend their influence to warrant the call of a primary meeting, with the view to organize a society for promoting American husbandry. The names are to be transmitted to Washington by the joth of August, addressed to H. L. Ellsworth, Commissioner of Patents, for Solon Robinson. Should the indications appear favorable, a com.

Kennoa was fiued on Thursday by the Mayor, in the sum of $3 and Costs, for fast driving through the streets. Appoint nfi. The Mayor yesterday appoint, ed William Young and John Walker, high constables, and William Bramble and John Mets ger, special constables.

These gentlemen held the same appointments under the Recorder, and by this act have been placed under the supervi sion of the Mayor exclusively. Railroad Accidentia Thursday night the train of cars from the West met with an acci dent on the Columbia railroad, near Downing, town, in consequence of the truck striking against the bottom of one of the cars and breaking a part of the bottom ont, through which a number of the passengers fell to the ground. Fortunately, at the moment of the accident, the coupling chain attaching the car and the loco, motive broke, leaving the train standing still the engine went on. Although ten or twelve persons went through the breach in the car, but one person was injured, Mrs. Davis, of this city, who had one of her arms broken, ex cept a young man, who, after the danger was past, jumped from the car and sprained an ankle.

There upwards of seventy passengers in the train, and when the accident occurred the em bankment was some fifty ft high, which, circumstances considered, make it nltogether a fortunate escape. The passengers in the above mentioned train who came on from Chambersburg, were in the morning detained near Newville, in consequence ot the locomotive running over a bullock and being precipitated down an embankment. They arrived in the city yesterday morning, instead of 10 o'clock the night before. The Courti. The Court of General Sessions, and the Common Picas and District Courts were not iu session yesterday.

Jm of a Favorite. The sailing pleasure yacht whilom one of the favorite craft on the river, lias been sold to Mobile for four hundred dollars. She is bought by the same parties that purchased from this port the Count Pulaski. Sotd Mode of Selling a Horse. A man in South street, the other day, on the new and gravelled over paving, finding he could get no purchaser for ihc two horses be was ed them against each other for a race.

Riders were procured, what was judged a mile determined upon, nnd up and down up and down the new paving they went. The mile was done in five minutes, Washington beating Lafayette one minute so said. Parties arose upon the respective merits of the horses, and the consequence was, as the cunning owner no doubt foresaw, that bot were sold. The A'w Bridge at Collovhill Strtet. This contemplated superstructure is in progress, the workmen being engaged busily on both sides of the river.

Ou the east side, they ere eugagid in digging through rock, at a distance of about 50 or GO feet from the front of the abutment on the river, the depth at the extremejioint from the water, of about nine feet, for the purpose of ma king fast the wire cable of which the bridge is to be constructed. On side of the river, at alxwt the same distance as on the east side, back from the front of the abutment, the work men are also excavating, but not through rock, some twenty or thirty feet, for the purpose of fixing in the fastenings of the ends of the wire cable. The front of the western abutment has been taken down a short space back, for the purpose of being piled and making a permanent foundation. One cable has been made, sad may be seen on the road lending between Harding's and the Permanent bridge. It is about two inch es in diameter, composed of wire the 16th part of an inch thick, the stran being coated with paint when put together.

The bridge, it is ex pected, will be done by the first of March. Sent Lovn belotc. On Thursday last, officer Levin H. Smith arrested a man named William Ross, under peculiar circumstances. The case came up for a hearing before Alderman Binns It appears that the defendant hired a horse and York wagon of Mr.

Francis Duffy, a livery stable keeper, several days since, add did not return it, but on the contrary, placed the animal and re hicle in another livery stable, leaving it to the care of auother proprietor. After a minute in vesication of the case, the Alderman bound Ross over in the sum of six hundred dollars to answer the charge at the next session of tbe Court of General Sessions. In default of enter ing the requisite security, the defendant was committed. C7 The Bolivar broke ber larboard crank yesterday morning, while coming down the ri rer. She will be ready this morning to make her two trips a day as usual.

Meeting on Ship Board A religious meeting for seamen will be held on Sunday afternoon, on board the ship Thomas P. Cope, at Walnut street wharf, which will be addressed by the Rev. Wm. L.

Ia jumping from freight car oa tbe track, without observing the approach of the passenger tram from Columbia he was struck on the IcA knee by its locomotive, knocked down, and whirled beacath the follow, ing cars, tbe wheels of which ran over and crushed bis right ankle. Tbe train stopped, and the poor man was taken up in a dreadfully mangled state, and favored with every assistanca which the circumstances ol the case would afford. Robbery. The store of Benedict D.

Stewart, at the comer of Willow street and Old York road, was forcibly entered on Monday night last or Tuefday morning, 2tith and morocco lea titer to the amount of about one hundred dollars stolen therefrnni. The thief or thieves set fire to the place, which providentially went out with out doing much damage. Mr. S. was out of town st the time.

The thieves appear to have been well guarded, as we understand tbe comer is a meeting place for several watchmen. Iphcest. Samuel Ileintztlman, Coroner, Offtcet So. 41 A'orM Fifth Street, and at tht Corner of Paayunk Road and German St. Yesterday morning, between 2 and 3 o'clock, the Coroner was called upon to hold an inqiest in Coates alley, on the body of Ann File, 19 years of age, ho came to her death by taking a quantity of laudanum, with the design of self destruction, on the afternoon previous.

It appears she was disappointed in not receiving the continued attentions of a young man who had been paying his addresses to her. Verdict, suicide cause, disappointed love. Another. On the body of James Hagans, 22 years of age, who was fouud drowned near Walnut street wharf. The deceased was recognised as tbe sailor belonging to the ship John, who fell overboard a few days ago, near Vine street wharf.

He was from Londonderry. Verdict, accidental drowning. Mcrderocs ArraAV in Tennessee. An account is given in the Southern papers of an of fray which occurred on the Savannah road, in Wayne county, Tenn. It seems that an officer by the name of Stults went to the house of a man by the name of Brooks, to arrest him, aud took with him several persons for that purpose.

Upon arriving at the place, Brooks came out with his rirle and shot a young man by tbe name ef Towery, who was along for the purpose of assisting the officer. Towery died immediately. Stutts, the officer, then fired upon Brooks as he retreated into the house, and put two piMol balls ii.to his back, brooks was lir ing by the last account had from him, but it was thought he had received a mortal wound. A gnera! fight ensued between the constable and his posse, and the friends of Brooks, who at tempted to prevent an arrest. i in.

i A Mot in Nova Scotia Our neighbors in Nova Scotia are as liable to lawless outbreaks ns ourselves. We commend the following to the Canadian papers, so ready to record every row that takes puce ia the States. A letter from Dalhousie, dated 14th published in the Halifax Journal, says'1 We are in an alarming stnte here all law and authority put at defiance by a lawless mob of lumberers and sailors. Tbe pound has been totally destroyed the jail partially, and eleven prisoners released. The sheriff, on the 9rh, after making a prisoner, was knocked down in the public street, at noon day, and the prisoner marched off iu triumph by the mob.

Provokino to the Heirs It is stated that the draft of a will in the handwriting of Mr. Charles Lee, of Barre, who was lost on board the ill fated Lexington, was lately found beneath the false bottom of a travelling trunk that had been thrown aside. In the disposition of his property, the sum of $20C0 was bequeath ed to the town for the establishment of a ublic library, $0000 to tbe Unitarian Society, and 10(i0 to Us pastor.

Another Bank Rosserv. Thirty seven thousand dollars have been stolen from the vault of the Planters' Bank, in Savannah, Ga. The robbery was of the notes of that bank, of fifty and twenty dollars denomination. The bills were signed by George W. Anderson, President, and James Marshall, Cashier.

A reward of three thoutand dollar is offered for the apprehen sion of the individaal who stole the money. Tnar.r Lives Lost. Three lives were lost at Erie (Pa.) last week. A Mr. King, of Pittsburg, with his family, in attempting to make a landing at Erie in a small boat from the New England Steamer, on board of which they had taken passage from Cleveland, were capsized, and two of the children and the servant drowned.

Venerable ron its Antio.uitv. The rule limiting members to one hour's speaking, has existed in public assemblies for 2000 years, a correspondent of the National Intelligencer says. It was a regulation much admired by the Greeks. Members of Congress will no doubt submit to it with a better grace, sioce it has been discovered to have a classic origin. The U.

Ship Delaware, the flag ship of Commodore Morris, while waiting for final orders and despatches from the South, has been ordered to be brought up and to lay off Ana polis, in order to afford an opportunity to the members of Congress, and other members of the government, to view her. Writs have been issued by tbe Speaker of the Senate, in the Seventh Senatorial District, composed of the counties of Dauphin and Lebanon, ordering an election on the second Tuesday of October next, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Mr. Killinger.

Melancholy Accident. Mr. Joshua Martin, son of Paul Martin, Sheriff of Cumberland county, while testing the speed of horse last week, was thrown upon his bead and killed. The Illinois Bank Rosiest. The St.
