Lea tc Ulan chard may be ih wont gentlemanly, liberal, uptight, and intelligent uien in iiw worm. in we do inn assert or deny, for it i not much to the pur note. But (hall these firm be the censors of the pre. ih controller of public opinion and the despo tic monarch of all who atpire to the reputation or the profit of authorship 1 Such they are, in edict, at this moment. We do not ask, are these gentle aien attaltftd for such complicated duties? But we demand if the toleration of auch censorship, such ab solute rule, be eouaiaieut with the interest of let term and with that generous independence and deli cacy of filing hicb distinguish men of real genius I Would not many an author of merit corinuit his ma nucript to the flames, rather than dance aticndaace on the Messrs, Harpers, ate, ami sue to them for an introduction to the public The very idea of their unlimited afuiisdicliaa would, iu suih a case, be shocking and repulsive, il We hear complaint that the writers of ihe present age pruduce' nothing to survive their own natural existence or, (it might be added,) to outlast Ibeir new breecht.

Can it be asked why Here i a sufficient explanation. Tour elect bookseller will seldom touch any thing but that which is most ealetile, namely, work of light Eclion. The favored book teller havo coriupted the public tate by flooding the community with novels; aye, had one for there are very few novels of a late dote which deserve not that epithet. We do uot mean bad, as it respects molality, though toaieef them will scarcely escape ceuure there, but we mean to ay that a very great majority of the late fiction uot excepting those published by Lea Blanchard and Messr. Harpers are bad, a literary composi tione: trahy, worthies, barren, and every way con tcuiptible. Thi i the opinion, the annat opinion at teaot, of every literary man who venture to speak oa the subject. Supposing this fact to be granti.Hl, shall ftnd that the booksellers, whose jruprint is necetwary to make every work paw current, have erred to a considerable extent while they have sealed with thuir apyoval hundreds of books which are ab solutcly not worth their weight in the rags from which they have their origin.

it be observed that we are not preaching a eru sa.lo against Lea tc Blanchard and the Harpeis. In a buiunes point of view, they, a individuals, are blameless, We make war against the system of literary monopoly, which ive bold to be the most ruin mi system, a it respect the iutnrestsof the belles letter, which could possibly Thi will keep our literature what it i. The French vessel in New fork kabor celebrated the 7t Jvun by firing of Lirttiurr. A acene exciting autne one men iook juace in ourhitrbor yestenlnjr, has not been ht'Ueld here the first ahip crossed the Atlantic. The ilaf waa jileasant, bright uml beautiful.

The howtra of the preceding evening had cleared the air, and a cool brecie wits Uowing iroin tut? fwaiufri aiic able than in often eierienccd in New Yoik at this season of the year. It haVing been announced that the two largest sicojh vessels ia the world, as well asbove. ral packets, were to leave lor Enroiic at 12 o'clock, the whole town was nstir long before, that hour orrived. Carriages loaded with pas senders and bngnge wore, passing in one continuous ftrcam to the foot of Clinton alreet, wiiere the leviathans oi the deep were lying. The steamboats which were to accompany jaein down the bay were loaded almnt to muk tng with the frtcuds of thcse who were embark inir, and with thousands others who wre crowding to behold the interesting jsight.

Eve. rv dock" and rlbr, from Clinton atrcet to the battery, throuced With a dense mass of human beings. The Hattery and Castle Carden were also filled with spectators. The shipping was completely covered, the and rigging being literally alive with Brooklyn also presented a mighty throng, standing in long and solid columns across heroeuutiful heights. A goodly proportion of the immense gatherings, b)lh on land and water, was composed of ladies, whose cheeks seemed to blush with unwonted loveliness as they were kissed by the healthy breeze, ami lluMiiai with the excitement ot the occasion.

About half past one the Great Western came out from the dock, tired her gun, n'nd started on her way. receiving the cheers of the teas of thousands as she passed. Shortly after "the observed of all ubservcrs," the noble Jliitish (jueen, came out, and it wits soon evident that the full measure of enthusiiifm wasreserved lor her. Cheers long and loud burst out from shores, docks, ships ami steamboats. As she proceeded down the bay she continued firing iter gun, and returning the immense cheer ot populace.

She was accompanied by the steam racket Neptune. the loats Arrow. Novelty. I'ns saie and Hercules, decorated with the nags of botn nations, and two or three ot them accom panied bv bunas ol muMc, who continued play mg the tvorite national airs of both countries until they had reached the lower bay, to which place we' ill now change the The Ontario, for London, had hauled out of her berth and started on her easlern voyage about ten o'clock, and thus gained a two hours start of the whole licet which followed her. Next the Orpheus, for Liverpool, raised her sails to the favoring breeze, ami shot down the bay in magnificent style at the rate of 8 knots an hour.

At 1 o'clocu the beautinijj Havre packet Baltimore left the in tow ot the Sun steamer, and before reaching (he Hook, where the steamer left her. passed the Orpheus, a few rods. At that time the Great Western, which. started halt an hour alter the Baltimore, ame thundering along some two miles behind, nnd before the latter and the Orpheus had turned their bows to the Last, she shot at least two miles ahead of them. The, Onlario had passed almosty entirely out of sight.

Some seven or eight miles behind Ihe Wcfern, came the para; gon of naval architecture, the Queen, with the throng of steamers hovering around her, bring ing up the rear in grand style. The tcene in the lower buy, where all these splendid packets were iu sight at once, all sails set and speeding before Ihe wind, beside the new fast sailing Scutherenr. and several other sliips and brias. under full sail, and the gay steamers of our own waters. A ereat deal of speculation and iblerest ex isled among' the spectators iu relation to the relative speed of the two great objects of interest in this scene and.

in that lehalf there was a division of individual feeling not easily recon citable in the human mind. The' Queen evi. dently had the genera partiality in her favor. whjle the Western possessed the general jtidg ment. Indeed, during their passage to the Hoof the latter evidently increased the dis tance between ner ana tne yueen witn almost every revolution of her wheels; and, however she may be abw to change the aspect of the race alter luirly entering upon the great deep the Queen certainly did not maintain her ground between tliejritv and the Hook.

Many bets have been made here as to which will reach hei tdaci)f destination first. We have heard no person estimate the nam ber ot those who were spectators ol yesterday doings at less than one hundred thousand, and we do nut hesitate to say that at least five thou sand attended the licet down the bay on board the Various steamboats. This, together with the specie sent out by these vessels, will show England that the gloomy news she sends us dot not damp our spirits. The number of passengers who left yesterday for the old world was probably double to that of any other occasion. By this morning, they win rise to hail the main and skies, But not their mothi i earth." Hut it Hi'ins from an Article in the New York Sua, tliut a new impulse Has been given to the public tcnaibilities, by some occurrences hich took place on Wednesday and Thursday last. A Mr.

Jamva Wood, of this city, now In New York, together with a person named John CouniH. went to the no lice office in that city on Wednesday last, and awore (bat thoy had probable cause to susrwet that John Arlin, the injured husband, and Win. Garland, his particular friend, had several month since, whim ihey resided in this city, stolen seven nreight silver teaspoon fromWood's house.which weieconceatedat Garland's residence. A search warrant.inthe bandsof an olllrer, penatrated every nook and corner of the latter dwelling, but no spoons wete to bu found. A felony warrant waa then issued, on Ihe complain! of Counsel, who awore that he bad seen four silver spoons, worth $1 each, jn Garland possession, and that tbo latter informed him that Arlin bad three others hicli were stolen from Wood.

Mr. Arlin and his wife were found boardingtogcthur.and he.with his friend Garland, was taken and lodged in the watch' house for the njglit. In the more ing they were dii mitwed, on a promise to appear at an hour appointed. A soon a they were released they weut and obtain ed a rit against a brother of McOowan, who went on from (hi city at the beginning of the week, and to whom was ascribed tnaautborshipof these arrests, irt order to create a diversion in favor of bis brother, now in prison. On this writ ho was arrested on a charge of majkiou arrest and 'false imprisonment, and, in default of bail, lodged in prison.

Gar land and Arlin then ent before a justice aud denied the bole of the accusations against tbeiu, stating that they had proceeded from malicious motives, and for the purpose of injuring the testimony of Carland, who i an important witness in the seduction case. As no property was found upon thorn, and no evi denccsof their guilt, they were dichnrgwt from ar rest and custody aud the complaint dismissed. The affair it appears, so far as Arlin and Garland are concerned, bars favorable aspect for cither of these persons.
