Jimmy Key (13-6) pitched a six-hitter, Lloyd Moseby and Cliff John- son drove in two runs apiece and Jesse Barfield homered and doubled as the Blue Jays won their second game in a row after dropping the opener of the four-game series. It was the first time since Aug. 1 the Yankees had lost two in a row and gave the Blue Jays a 90-52 record, the most victories in the club's nine-year history. Davis chased starter Floyd Bannister (6-14) with his his 17th homer of the season in the seventh inning. Davis connected after singles by Jack Perconte and Phil Bradley, an intentional walk to Al Cowens and Gorman Thomas' RBI forceout produced one run. Bannister, who has lost 10 of his last 11 decisions, struck out 10 to give 172 strikeouts and tie him with Minnesota's Bert Blyleven for the American League lead. Platteville's only score came on a 31-yard field goal by Scott Sindelar in the second period after the Pioneers recovered a St. Joseph's fumble on the Puma 14. The Pumas stopped three Pioneer scoring threats in the final quarter. Platteville drove to the St Joseph's 20 before losing the ball on downs early in the period. Brian Hill later intercepted a Pioneer pass at the goal line.

The final threat ended when Platteville ran out of downs on the St Joseph's seven-yard line.
