Instead of erecting, at a large cost, a Statue which can be no possible gratification to tne August Lady whose expressed wishes would be thus violated, let us all have the opportunity of carrying in our purses the image of our beloved Sovereign, ere it be rendered impossible by the inevitable coming of that (Jay when we shall have to mourn instead of to rejoice, and when this tardy expression of our loyalty will fail to reach that gracious Sovereign whose wishes we should now delight to regard as law. I refer, of course, to the reform of the currency, a question which only needs facing boldly to commend itself as much upon its own merits as upon its peculiar adaplibility to the present Commemoration. 1 have no means of accurately ascertaining the total amount of Foreign Silver in circulation or hoarded in this island possibly some one in a better position to estimate this may be able to give approximate figures. It is, however, sufficiently )arcrc to be the means of furnishing a lare profit or subsidy to those countries wlio originally minted and issued it, and who from time to time replenish the amount in circulation here. It is only necessary to compare the value of these coins as silver (taken upon the intrinsic value of the metal) with the mined or face value to appreciate the enor- CONSISTING OF PIANOFORTES from 18 to 80 AMERICAN ORGANS from 6 to 45 ACCORDIONS 3s.

Apart from all sentimental questions of attachment to the Mother Country, it seems but fair that that country, which a market for the whole of the produce of this island, should benefit by the circulation liere of its own coinage to the entire exclusion of French silver, especially when, by means of prohibitive import duties our produce is shut out from French markets.

is an erroneous but general feeling that, in some mysterious way, we -hould nt' pi-roent. by alteration, but 1 have sufficient belief in our commonsense to feel that the most elementary consideration of the question would expose this fallacy. There is surely sufficient competition in local trade to ensure, a rapid adjustment of prices to the standard necessary upon the introduction, whenever such event may occur, of the British currency. Tlie only necessary losers by the change would be the. local banks, who are now practically compelled to levy, by means of the necessary difference between the premium given and charged, what amounts to a toll upon the greater part turn-over of the trade of this island with England.

Their loss in this would be the legitimate gain of every grower, merchant, tradesman or other individual, paying to or receiving from England by cheque. To return to the sentimental aspect, there could no longer be the question asked, as quoted by A Loyal Subject'' in your last issue, Wltosc image and superscription hath it with the sequent cogent and logical argument, Reader therefore unto Ccesar the things that are Ctesar'a" Thanking you for allowing me so much space, I am, Sir, yours, Albert J. Hodges. REVIEW. Idler.

Edited by Jerome K. Jerome. Price, one shilling. The Idler for February opens with a new serial story by Stanley J. Weyman entitled Shrewsbury," a tale of the 17th century.

Judging from the opening chapter a first-class story of adventure is in store. Allen Upward contributes another of his clever "Horrors of London." "The burglar and the bank manager" is an exciting story. Revelations of -an album," by Joseph Hatton, are as good as ever. Our AfiC and its history is a most learned essay by the Rev. H.

N. Hutchinson, B.A, and traces the letters used at the present oUy rrom tlieir most remote origin illustrations greatly help the text. The life of Napoleon III." by Archibald Forbes, is brought up to the Coup d'Etat in 1851, and the in Paris are graphically related. Many portraits of the leading statesmen and generals of that time are given. "A chat with Seppings Wright," with a number of illustrations supplied to the Illustrated London News by that clev er artist and war corespondent will not fail to please.

A rash experiment," is most amusing, and Max Tegelstein's duel is really a remarkable narrative with a terribly tragic ending. The editor's special contribution, Letters to Clorinda," Richard Le Gallienne's "Wanderings in Bookland," and the ever entertaining Idlers' Club, who this week discuss I he mother in-law is she as black as the i- painted, or worse complete a part which deserves to be in very great request. -HIPPING INTELLIGENCE ST.
