East completely controlled Edge-wood in the final period and, with Collins hitting his first three jump shots, the Purgolders took a 34-26 lead. Barry broke the ice for Edgewood with a pair of free throws with 3 minutes, 10 seconds left, but East continued to run up the lead and added nine more points, including a three-point play by Benderman for a 43-28 lead. Greg Meyer's last-second shot gave Edge-wood its only basket of the period. Both teams return to overdog status in Friday night games.

East faces rangy Madison West in a Big Eight Conference clash, while Edge-wood plays defending Badger Conference champion Stoughton in its fourth straight road game. blocked four punts, is rated as good a prospect as Liter by UW-La Crosse Coach Roger Harring. "Our plan was to double-team him when we played De Soto, but we handled him less than 50 percent of the time," Cashton's Hanson said. OfferdahL with 40 solo tackles, 115 assisted tackles and five interceptions, led a Fort Atkinson defense hich allowed only 2.9 yards per rush. Anderson, who had 10 interceptions, was considered West's best defensive back since Jim Bakken in 1957.

Bakken played at the University of Wisconsin and was a longtime placekicker for the SL Louis Cardinals. "Anderson is an outstanding tackier, and no one completed a pass in the middle of our deep zone coverage all year," Hable said. Area players on the second team are guard John Dennis of Madison West, running back Bruce Hemmers- By Don Lindstrom State Journal sports reporter With another superb defensive performance. Madison East earned its first city series' victory Tuesday night with a 43-30 decision over Madison Edgewood on the Purgolders' court. Trailing once by eight points in the first half, East, which held 11 opponents under 55 points last season, forced Edgewood into 29 turnovers and limited the frustrated Crusaders to just 10 points in the second half.

Mike Collins scored 18 points and Jeff Wilcox had eight to lead East to its second victory in three games this season. Edgewood slipped to 1-2 overall Robert Barry paced the meager Edgewood scoring with 16 points and personally accounted for eight of the 10 Crusader points in the second half. East stole the ball at least 15 times and forced Edgewood into ball-handling mistakes so often the Crusaders got off only eight shots during the first 14 minutes of the second half. "That's jus the way wanted to play it," said East Coach John Boyle, i Krumrie named AP all Continued from Page 1 Springs, guards Steve Meulemans of Fond du Lac Springs and Pearson, center Brian Debelak of Greendale, placekicker Joe Mirasola of Schofield and backs Cummings and ReinerL Liter, one of the most avidly recruited major college prospects in the state, also made the first-team defense as an end. He was the only two-way player named.

Liter has been compared favorably with Tom Schremp, a two-way all-state lineman at Antigo several years ago and later a University of Wisconsin star. Liter, a three-year all-Clover-belt Conference player who was all-state honorable mention last year, is being courted by 53 major colleges. Others on the No. 1 defense are end Shawn Reed of Green Bay Preble; linemen Greg Ochalek of Milwaukee More, Mike Pionek of Stevens Point and Malin; linebackers Dan Rubenzer of Chippewa Falls McDonelL Ed Garrett of Milwaukee Pius and OfferdahL and -defensive backs Anderson, Ken KubLsz of Cudahy and Jim Kerr of Wausau West. Mauser caught 17 passes for 599 yards an amazing average of 36 yards per catch and eight touchdowns for Cashton's run-oriented Division VI champions.

Hauser, who caught three touchdown passes in the title game against Poynette, is also a second-team all-state linebacker. "He can play anywhere. We needed an end, so that's where he played," Cashton Coach Gary Hanson said. Johnson, also a top basketball and baseball prospect, averaged 17.3 yards on 33 catches for Madison Memorial. "He's absolutely impossible to stop one-on-one," Janesville Parker Coach Don Barnabo said.

Cummings rushed for 1,194 yards, averaged six per carry, scored 16 touchdowns and is seventh among all-time prep rushers in Madison. Madison West Coach Burt Hable described Cummings as "a deadly power runner, good open-field blocker and with the keenest football instincts you can imagine." "Cummings is going to be a great fullback at some big-time school," Memorial Coach Wally Schoessow said. "He's an awesome blocker and unstoppable up the middle." Reinert led De Forest to a Division IV runnerup finish for a second successive year by rushing for 1,436 yards in 174 carries, catching 18 passes for 282 yards, scoring 23 touchdowns, passing for a touchdown and kicking 41 extra points and a field goal. "He's a step above everyone I've seen him play against," De Forest Coach Jerry Roelke said. Malin, who had eight sacks and who was pleased with the outcome.

"That means defense when you hold a team to that few shots and that many turnovers." By coincidence, the score was the same, 43-30, when East beat Edge-wood in their last meeting, Jan. 31, 1981, at East Both teams played conservatively during the first half, and Edgewood, mainly on the shooting of Barry, Yago Colas and Todd Green, edged from a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter to an 18-10 advantage through theirst five minutes of the second period. East's defense then started to ruffle the Crusaders while Collins and Wilcox picked up the last 10 points of the half for the Purgolders and they pulled even at 20-20 by intermission. East's defense emerged even stronger in the second half, and immediately forced three straight turnovers. Mike Heller put East ahead, 22-20, and the teams were even until Glen Benderman's layup with four seconds left in the third quarter Cedric Jones.
