Marty Wiitala, a two-time all-state prep star from Superior has verbally committed to attend the University of Wisconsin next season. Wiitala, a rangy center who led Superior to state titles during his junior and senior years, told Badger assistant coach Mike Kemp Monday night that he will attend the UW next season. He also made the announcement to the Duluth News-Tribune Tuesday. Wiitala, considered by coaches and scouts to be the the best player in Wisconsin this season, was also being recruited heavily by Minnesota-Duluth.

This is a big week recruiting for Wisconsin, which has already received a commitment from Rochester (Minn.) forward Jim Johannson, the brother of Badger center John Johannson. Cory Millen, the highly sought center from Cloquet, is expected to announce his decision on colleges this weekend. Wisconsin is battling Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth for the little centerman. The Badgers are also expected to land forward Ernie Vargas of Coon Rapids, who is said to be a possible first- or second-round draft choice in June's National Hockey League draft. They are still battling Minnesota over the prize recruit, de-fenseman Phil Housley of South St.

Paul Minn. Yankees swap Castro for Hobson FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) The New York Yankees acquired third baseman Butch Hobson from the California Angels Wednesday in exchange for former Milwaukee Brewer relief pitcher Bill Castro. Hobson, 30, batted .235 with four home runs and 36 RBIs for the Angels in 85 games last season. He was obtained by California from Boston in December 1980 after playing five seasons with the Red Sox.

Castro, 29, was a non-roster player in the Yankees' training camp. Last season he was 8-1 at Columbus of the International League after signing a three-year, $450,000 free-agent contract with New York. Donlan: NFLPA demands illegal PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) The National Football League Players Association's demand for a fixed percentage of the profits is illegal, NFL negotiator Jack Donlan said Wednesday. Donlan, executive director of the NFL Management Council, the owners' bargaining unit, also said the league would consider putting players not in the union on the field for the 1982 season and that the three networks which just signed a $2-billion contract would have to televise the games.

The union, whose collective bargaining agreement expires July 15, is demanding a fixed percentage of the teams gross revenues for future wages. "How you give unions money to divide up is very specifically set by law," Donlan said at a news conference at the the NFL's spring meetings after he had briefed the owners on the progress of the contract talks. "The government basically says you can't do it except under some very stringent conditions. One of those conditions which is specifically excluded is for wages." Patrick sports information director Bob Leu relay Johnson's hoarse words to reporters. "I feel like a Russian interpreter," said Leu. Before his voice left him, Johnson indicated Terry Kleisinger will likely start in goal Friday and Marc Behrend will play Saturday. Incidentally, Johnson, always the optimist, did not list Saturday afternoon's consolation game as a viable possibility on the team's intinerary which was given to all members of the Badger traveling party Wednesday. stayed in Providence Wednesday.

The Badgers will be housed for the whole tournament in Mystic, a seaport town one hour away. North Dakota is staying in Kingston, R.I., 45 minutes away from the Providence Civic Center and New Hampshire went back to their homes in Durham, N.H., after skating at the Civic Center Wednesday. They will stay in Providence at the Biltmore Hotel, the tourney headquarters, only Friday night. Bill 'Rocket' Rothweli, the former Badger coach, is the admission's director at New Hampshire, but there was no sign of The Rocket at Wednesday's workout. Associated Press 'X XT jfi" ilk Marty Wiitala Lexi Doner, the Badgers' speedy center, made the trip here, but will not play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.

Doner has a pulled muscle in his forearm which has affected the nerves in his fingers and thumb. "If I could have given the thumbs up' signal," said Doner, "the doctors would have let me play." But Doner can't raise his fingers and will be sitting in the stands this weekend. Thus, the lineup will be the same for Friday's NCAA semifinal game against New Hampshire as it was for the Harvard quarterfinal series. Sweden's Bjorn Borg and Vitas Gerulaitis of the United States won opening-round matches Wednesday night and will play each other in the final of a $120,000 exhibition tennis tournament in Cascais, Portugal. Gerulaitis, who beat Borg in an exhibition match Tuesday night in Copenhagen, Denmark, breezed by West German Rolf Gehring, 6-2, 6-4.

Borg, who ended a five-month layoff Tuesday, beat Australian Paul McNamee, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. In Wednesday's second-round play in the $350,000 Cuore Tennis Cup in Milan, Italy, third-seeded Hockey notes North Dakota goes into tonight's semifinal against Northeastern in bad shape. Dave Tippett, the Fighting Sioux's outstanding freshman center, is doubtful with a bruised thigh and de-fenseman Mike Stone and forward Dean Dachshyn have broken wrists and will play with their hands in casts. Bjorn Borg Due to the expected influx of 3,500 Badger fans, officials at the Providence Civic Center are talking about a sellout for Friday's New Hampshire-Wisconsin game at the 10,800 seat arena. North Dakota brought only 100 fans, however, and both Eastern schools, Northeastern and New Hampshire, are unsure how many people they will bring to Providence.

Stemkowski, of Atlantic Beach, was charged with conspiracy. Badgers set sights on New Hampshire Continued from Page 1 first time. The Huskies, who won the Eastern playoffs and ousted Bowling Green in the semifinals, have a 24-8-2 record, but they are the distinct underdog against the Sioux, the regular season Western Collegiate Hockey Association champions and the club which split six games against Wisconsin this year. It's the proposed seventh game of the Sioux-Badger series which has the Badgers looking ahead.

"I think we have to guard against that, for sure," said Badger senior winger Ken Keryluk. "But I think everyone will get in the right frame of mind in the next couple days.

The coaching staff has a lot to do with that." The Badger staff has been talking a lot about New Hampshire, about their all-American winger Andy Brickley, who has 52 points, and about Brick-ley's linemates, Dan Forget (13 goals, 46 poinst) and Norm Lacomb (18 goals, 24 points). Once the Badgers got a chance to see the Wildcats work out Wednesday, the selling job wasn't so tough. The Wildcats have good size and are quick. Holt showed why he is a tough coach to play against. In the few minutes the 'Cats worked out.

Holt had his team show approximately a half dozen different breakouts. Johnson, the Badger coach, considers Holt one of the most innovative coaches in college hockey, but Holt, a look alike of Harvard Coach Bill Cleary pooh-poohs that idea. "I think there is a tendency to give coaches too much credit," said Holt, underestimating himself. "Maybe not in the case of Bob, because everyone knows how he adjusts so well to situations in a game. But certainly in my case.

"I don't think I'm innovative, but I don't know what you can call me. You can't call me a great disciplinarian or a great public speaker. We try to do some things, but if I tried to figure out all the adjustments Bob makes during a game, it would take a couple hours and the game would be over." Holt got done downplaying his club and himself long enough to admit the Wildcats have improved tremendously since Minnesota-Duluth beat them twice early in the year. "We looked quite inept in those games," said Holt of the Duluth series in November. "But after the first of the year we seemed to turn things around.

And right now, we're playing like we deserve to be the No. 2 (team) in the East." $500 REBATE CENTURY Atlanta 24, Kansas City 29. Technical Rollins. Att. 5,212.
