6 Part VIFriday, October 19, 1984 Cos Angeles States MOVIE REVIEW A TALE OF SEX, SQUALOR IN 'CRIMES OF PASSION' NOW SHOWING dialogue, Turner acts if she's auditioning for some loopy Mae West impersonation contest. Eyes wide and nostrils flaring, she looks like a doe caught in the glare of a hunter's headlights. Perkins is her perfect body double. Sweating profusely, all atwitter with erotic fantasies of revenge and guilt, he appears so completely unhinged that you could swear Russell hotwired him to a '57 Chevy before each take. As far back as "The Devils" and "Dance of the Seven Veils," Russell has given his every assignment the Grand Guignol treatment, using his swollen imagination to create a gaudy landscape full of vulgar, self-loathing characters and images of decay and corruption.

But here he's transformed what could have been a daring study of sexual politics into a squalid, irredeemable disaster. CRIMES OF PASSION' A New World Pictures release. Producer Barry Sandler. Co-producer Donald P. Borchers.

His latest effort, "Crimes of Passion" (city wide), is deliriously bad, directed by Russell as if someone had slipped something into his morning coffee. The film focuses on Bobby Grady (John Laughlin), a boyish electronics wiz who's trapped in a stale marriage to a shrewish wife. When it becomes apparent that his grumpy spouse would rather watch cable TV than snuggle under the covers, Grady takes a surveillance job tailing Joanna Crane (Kathleen Turner), a schizzy fashion designer who spends her nights disguised as a kinky hooker named China Blue. There's another lonely guy stalking this edgy, enigmatic streetwalker the Rev. Peter Shayne (Anthony Perkins), a sin ister, sexually obsessed street-corner preacher.

The rest of the plot defies description, especially in a family newspaper. Under Russell's hilariously overwrought direction, the film's voyeuristic story line is full of so many gaping holes that you can only assume that either the projectionist skipped a reel or that Russell just decided to throw the script in the air and shoot the pages he caught on their way down. One of the biggest mysteries (along with plot details) is how Russell, who reportedly trimmed the most explicit sex scenes, managed to escape with a rating at all. Just watching the Reverend digging out samples from his bag of exotic sexual tricks would be enough to send Masters Johnson running for cover. This is an movie, all right as in "Are you kidding?"
