Mitzi Bernardin now enjoys the sea as much as her husband.

The race and his participation are fantastic." she bubbles, although she regrets she wasn't able to find him a sponsor. Tom Lmdholm's wife, Stella, recently completed an 18-month sail with him from California to Newport via the Panama Canal. Stella Lindholm's first reaction was resentment, but she gradually accepted the idea. Now that she's lived for so long on the boat, she is more confident because she knows what both he and the boat can do. Nevertheless, she also understands what can happen at sea, and she's thankful he's taking two of everything.

Dr. Lawrence W. Kneisley. a blue-water sailor and neurologist who is medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center in Torrance. and an assistant clinical professor at UCLA is conducting sleep and psychological studies of the racers.

In addition to pre-departure interviews and questionnaires, he's giving each sailor a log to keep. So far. he says, participants have voiced cooperation. Kneisley will analyze the effects of such a gigantic undertaking on racers' moods and sleep patterns, what kinds of things happen to the racers, how they respond, and what kind of person feels confident enough to lake on such a project. Lindholm.

the former L.A. policeman, had this response when asked why he signed up for the race: "So many people just don't do anything. They get up at 8 o'clock go to work come home and go to bed with Johnny Carson. And they don't do anything. They don't go anyplace.

So this way, you're doing something." Vauclair is a free-lance writer in Newport, R.l. lUwls in the IKK' Challenge have been rigged, fitted and strengthened to endure severe conditions. Kquip-ment spares are essential. All have life rafts. Some sailors have a trim tab in addition to the rudder to facilitate steering. And some have a backup system case power generation for their electronic instruments fails: solar panels.

Lush's three panels, affixed flat astern, total 7.5 amps and back up his autopilot. Byrne's four panels, which total amps back up his generator. Byrne mounted two of them almost amidships, flat on port and starboard docks, and two above his stern pulpit, flanking the wind vane. They lilt to the sky and can rotate horizontally. Some sailors, such as Stokes, will rely only on a sextant, compass, knotmeter, taffrail log.

windspeed indicator, ham radio and other basic navigation aids. But electronic equipment is popular in this race. Many sailors have satellite navigation systems, weather-data recorders and various radios. Yukon Tada has color radar (it's more sensitive). White, who says his boat and campaign will cost about $250,000.

claims he has everything in the way of electronics, including a sophisticated computer system. Because of his keel and sail problems, and the time it took to solve them. White has a virtually untried boat. "I'm worried about the first leg." he says. "If 1 get to Cape Town.

I figure I've got two-thirds of the race." White, dynamic and extroverted, began sailing in 1974 after a magazine article lured him into buying a boat, quitting his job and going sailing. He has never looked back. That same year he sailed with friends to the Marquesas and Tahiti, returning singlehanded to San Francisco. In 1975. he competed in the singlehanded Transpac to Hawaii, sailed back to the United States and then sailed solo to Japan.

He raced in the 1976 OSTAR. the 1979 Bermuda One-Two and the 1981 doublehanded Transatlantic race. In 1979, Stokes and, primarily, three other singlehan-ders Judy Lawson, Jerry Cartwright and Canadian Bob Lush began discussing a round-the-world race. In Newport. White contacted other singlehanders and eventually proposed the idea to Jim Roos, then property manager of Goat Island in Newport.

Roos agreed to organize the race and became director, and about 200 sailors worldwide expressed interest. White wanted to run the race from the United States because so many other major solo races originate in England and France. And he wanted an American sponsor. But after two years of looking, the result was nil. Ironically, when sponsorship did develop, it was British.

White thinks the United States hasn't gotten into singlehanded ocean racing the way some other countries have because nobody has "enough guts to market it properly." But "we'll catch on late," he said. "I think the mood is changing; (it's just that) nobody has ever taken a gamble before." The race. White says, wouldn't have gotten off the ground if it weren't for Richard Broadhead of England, who wrote to about 800 British companies looking for a sponsor for his boat. He didn't find one. but he did find BOC.

Broadhead. 29, has sailed round-trip solo passages between Great Britain and the Americas and made a vagabond trip down the Amazon to its mouth. His boat is a 52-foot, beamy (14 feet) refitted racing machine. Perseverance of Medina, a ketch turned cutter. For food, sailors will carry canned and freeze-dried provisions and mixes for biscuits and breads.

Some think they'll lose 20 pounds in the race, but not Francis Stokes: He has gained weight when singlehanding. often five pounds. "For the most part," he says, "there's not that much activity, and most of the cans you open are portions for two, and you tend to eat them. By yourself. It is easy to overeat." Keeping warm and dry can be a major problem, so one necessity is sufficient changes of warm clothes.

Dan Byrne has been seen around Newport in mid-August testing his new cold-weather clothing. Despite its lighter sides, the race is still the ultimate challenge for long-distance singlehanded sailors and one from which some racers may never return. The subject is taboo, but the prerace excitement on Goat Island can't completely camouflage the reality. Byrne says he wouldn't make the trip without support from wife Patricia, his race coordinator. Both are concerned about the risks, but both are determined that he complete the race.

He's taking a lot of radio equipment so he can phone her regularly while at sea. Francis Stokes says his five children think his participation is a "great idea." His wife, he says, is less excited, but "very good" about it.
