West, a farmer residing in Polk township, in this county, while recently en gaged in cutting a large oak tree on his premises, discovered a snake of the blue racer species, about five feet in length, embeded to the depth of over two inches beneath the bark. The cavity had originally been made in the tree by fire. His snakeship had doubtless sought it as a safe retreat during the win ter, went to sleep, and in the spring forgot to wake up until his means of exit had been cut off, by the growth of the tree. Them is no reason to doubt but that the snake had been confined in his narrow house for a number of years. He was in a good state of preservation, and after remaining in the sun for an hour or two exhibited excellent signs of life by attempting to seek "change of pasture." How the snake got there, and how be man aged to live 'for; years, is surely a profound mystery.

'V Last Thursday, May 10, was the day appointed for the pio nio at Mt. Etna. A more propitious day was rarely seen, and the air was re sonant with the cheerful sound of the Makepeace Cornet Band, as it called the party together. About forty couples of young and old assembled, and an early start was made. At Mt Etna a score of happy, couples from Marion arriv ed, and two couples from Wabash enjoyed the large share of happi ness allotted to that uncertain sis ter city.

Some how our friends at Wabash do. not 'turn out in these gatherings. The 'day passed very pleasantly. The party used shot guns rather prpmtscuousiy, and skirmished around so lively that a miniature Russian larkey campaign was carried on against some signs of "Warning to Hunters' nailed upon some trees. These signs were used as targets and shot at by the "boysi and girls too, One irate citizen came up to Con stable Younkman and asked him if he wasn't the Prosecuting Attor ney.and said' he wanted them pros ecu ted.

It is said' that 'some In dian "fire water" was clandestinely sold In the neighborhood. The ac commodations at the hotel were not in as they were mlsin formed by one of the committee as to the. plans, bat soon the mat ter was well adjujted. The dinner was enjoyed by all. There was not much cordiality at first, but soon a few of them introduced themselves, and finally all became acquainted.

The dancing was en joyed a comparative few, and was of a high artistic order. Of some of the Huntington irirls caught the eye of some of the strange young men, and as a consequence of oar young men lost their appetite for dinner and all other earthly enjoyments, and had silent thoughts of leaning over, a double barreled shot gun and kicking the trigger, while oth er of our young men, in a philosophical way, took, revenge on the Marionjboys by siding np tQ.tbeir young of which they had a goodly number, exquisitely good looking and highly accomplished.
