Speaking calmly and making no attempt to flee, the man told firefighters he lived in the house with his mother. Mother Away The mother had gone out to lunch a few minutes before the fire began, the man said. The man told The Times he started the fire because "I just like to see sparks." Neighbors complained that the man has set similar fires twice before, and said they were One neighbor, Margaret Wells, 19, said, "We can't go on dealing with this problem Every time we smell a barbecue in the neighborhood we run around to look at (his) house to see if anything is burning." A fire official on the scene, who asked not to be identified, confirmed that "we've been here before. This is not that much of a surprise." Firefighters, who estimated the fire caused $40,000 in damage, said the home was piled high with newspapers and other inflammable materials.

quickly turned bizarre when firefighters were set upon by hundreds of bumblebees that had built a hive on the front porch. The bees apparently were aroused by the smoke and the firefighters' yellow jackets, said Capt. Vern Kane. The bees swarmed into the street, buzzed around a red Hornet station wagon parked in the driveway and stung five firefighters, who were treated at Bristol Park Medical Center, Santa Ana, and released two hours later, Kane said. A special team of firefighters sprayed the house with a chemical compound and reported that most of the bees were killed within 10 CAL-SHAKE 5355 N.

Administrative secretaries at the station referred all questions to the station's attorney, William Simon, a board member and defendant in the lawsuit. A lawyer handling the lawsuit in Simon's Los Angeles firm said he had not yet seen the lawsuit and therefore refused to comment.

Conobre said he was fired after complaining about the alleged practices. The suit also alleges that Volpe received kickbacks by giving the largest sales accounts to his girlfriend and then taking a cut of her commission, that Volpe intimidated sales people so they would not testify for Conobre should he file suit and that Volpe conducted sales meetings "in a crude, ugly and intimidating fashion by using filthy and disgusting language." 'Public Attorney General' In addition, the suit charges the station with wrongful discharge (of Conobre) and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress upon all employees. Conobre's lawyer, Eileen C. Moore of Newport Beach, said Conobre is able to claim damages on behalf of other employees because he is suing as a "public attorney general," a little-used device to press charges on behalf of the public as well as himself. Conobre is seeking $2 million in general and punitive damages, $50,000 for medical expenses for emotional distress he said he suffered as a result of losing his job and $1.5 million for loss of earnings and business-related benefits.

Conobre began working at the station in August, 1982, two months before KDOC aired its first A former advertising salesman employed by Anaheim-based television station KDOC is suing the station and its top officials for more than $3 million alleging unfair business practices. Defendants named in the case filed in Orange County Superior Court Tuesday include singer Pat Boone, president of Golden Orange Broadcasting which owns the station; Wally George, station talk show host, and the estate of Jimmy Durante. Durante was at one time affiliated with the company. The salesman, 63-year-old Steve Conobre of Anaheim, was fired from his job at KDOC Orange County's only commercial station, which can be seen on Channel 56 on March 8 because, he said, he would not go along with what he alleged were fraudulent advertising practices encouraged by the station's general manager, Mike Volpe. He alleged that the practices were condoned by other of the station's corporation officials.

False Claims Alleged According to the suit, Volpe encouraged sales people to make false rating claims to advertisers and to attribute those claims to an invented rating service Anaheim Research Bureau. Salesmen allegedly were instructed to refer to the service as A.R.B., an abbreviation used by Arbitron, a nationally known service that provides ratings for television stations. Conobre said in an interview, "He (Volpe) was indicating that we had a certain amount of viewers At one time it was about 330,000, and then it was about 400,000. We didn't have any figures like that. I don't think they even belonged to a rating service, then or now." No one at the station would quality timepieces.
