Crime in Indiana. There aoouie to tloep nettud vein of crime and outrage amongst the people in various portions of Indian. For a long time there baa existed a feeling of insecurity ia regard to life and propertj in that State, which ban lad to the adoption of variont expedient ferret oit the gang of dexptradoea whose organization has been so perfect ane uo general. Vigilance Committees last Spring did good work, and succeeded in bringing to justice, many of the villains who bad succeeded in evading the grasp of the legal authorities. Thus some good was accomplished, and Nome settlements were for the time relieve! iVonxtho.

dangers of the mines whticli toiglitat any moment have exploded' beneath 'tlieir Bat the evil is far from being corrected, a is evidenced by the cmwtant reports given by the of murder, anion, burglary, and all the forma of crime known in the legal catalogue. And what makes the cane worse, i the tact, that the organiza tion, as is shown by trequeut developments, has thrown its network around and drawn within its folds men who have Htood before the world entirely above suspicion. such connections that make the band more formidable, because it renders the accompliHhment of their designs more easy. There is 'evidence we say, that this combination of criminals extend over the whole state, but there are certain regions in which the movements of the members seem to be characterized by more boldness than in others. Amongst the points which seem to be particularly subjected to depredation we notice Lafayette.

The Courier of that city, one of the best and most energetic sheets published in Indiana, gives frequent accounts of the robberies and outrages to which citizens are sub jected. In its issue of the Slat of August it gives an account of a hitherto respectable farmer named J. Paugh, who was arrested and bound over upon a charge of stealing fourteen head of cattle from a drove, which had been shipped east by parties in Lafayette. Two other men named Nolan, were ai rested, charged with being engaged with him. The same paper gives an account of the stealing of a horse from a car on the Valley Road on Monday.

It was a horse' which 4ad been shipped from Missouri to a gentleman near Lafayette, and after the arrival of the train, was stolen in day light, although there wore workmen engaged at the time in discharge of their various duties about the Depot. These men saw the horse taken put but suposing it was being done by the proper person paid no attention to it. In the same issue is ah account of the drugging and robbing of an Irishman at Crawfordsville. In the latter case we notice however that three men were arrested as the perpetrators of the deed. We really consider the state of society which permits itself to be subjected to such frequent acts of villany, one much to be deplored.

The really honest and reliable men of Indiana owe it to themselves and to the community everywhere to adopt some plan of operations that will effectually put a check to this state of things. They themselves are the parties who are to suffer most from its continuance, but the evil will spread, and its fruits multiply over the whole country. That there is enough of crime everywhere is freely admitted, but in Indiana it seems to have attained a fuller developement than anywhere slse. Toledo Blade. Belong and Slack Nominated, On the 21st nit.

Isaac DeLong was nominated, on the first ballot, at a convention of the Republicans of Huntington and VYhitley counties, for the State Senate. We know Mr. DeLong, well, and a better man for the place could not have been selected. He is reliable all the time. James R.

Slack is his competitor. Huntington and Whitley counties, in '56, gave a majority of eighty seven for Wil lard. Mr. Slack might get that majority if it were not for the Huntington Democrat. That paper, brim full as it is every week, of the dirtiest filth, cannot but injure any candidate it supports.

Unless. Mr. Slack contracts with it never to mention his name until after the election, DeLong will beat him two hundred at least. Mr. Slack is a gentleman for whom we have much respect.

We like all his qualities except his politics, and apart from this we could have no choice betwe the two gentlemen. But he will be beaten. Remember, friend Slack, what we tell you. If we mistake we will pay out, next winter, in oysters. That Democrat' of yours, that has not yet emerged from the cess pool in which it was born, will be the death of you.

Howard Tribune. "Tha Asylum for the Insane. The gentlemanly deportment of the Assistant Physicians, and the attendants, at the Asylnm for Insane, is a matter of congratulation and praise. The neat and orderly manner in which the hospital is kept most also be gratifying to every citizen it is a subject of remark by all visitors. No tax is more cheerfully paid, and none does more good than that paid for the support of the Benevolent Institutions.

The next Legislature should iirovide for a hospital for imbeciles and or incurable cuss of insanity. We hope that the system of returning to county asylums will be abandoned. Give them good quarters in a good institution, though not curable. There should be such an institution at Richmond, at Evansville and Fort Wayne. JGrHon.
