ETT1NGER, Henry Hillside Mortuary directors IDFIAJCt) 11' 1 1 1 From Times Wire Services GUINGAMP, France-Gilbert Renault, one of France's first and most honored resistance fighters during World War II, died while in this Breton town to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the liberation of France from Nazi rule, police said Monday. He was 79 and died of an apparent heart attack. Renault, known as Col. Remy, set up the first spy network in Nazi-occupied France.

Employees at Le Relais du Roy hotel said they forced open the door of Renault's room when he failed to come to breakfast, and discovered his body. Renault, head of a group that financed film productions before the war, went to London on June 28, 1940, to join Gen. Charles de Gaulle and his Free French Resistance movement. In August of that year, he returned to France as an agent of the Resistance and, using the nom de guerre Callanan Mortuary directors Renault and De Gaulle worked together after the war in De Gaulle's French Popular Rally Party but later went separate ways over the general's Algeria policies. His decorations included Commander of the Legion of Honor, Friend, of the Liberation, Rosette of the Resistance and honors from other countries, including Britain and Belgium where Renault smuggled his agents.

Among his books was "Memoirs of a Secret Agent of Free France," which was popular in the United States when it was published in 1948. On Monday, President Francois Mitterrand said Renault's "role in the convergence of the interior Resistance and Free France was among the most eminent." which stayed with him until his death, surveyed German movement along the Atlantic coast. By November he had developed the Confrerie Notre Dame, (Brotherhood of Notre Dame) which under the guise of a religious organization became a vast intelligence network; covering all of occupied France. Renault repeatedly escaped arrest by the Gestapo. When Nazi officers finally identified him in June, 1942, he smuggled his wife and four children to London.

The Nazis arrested his mother and five sisters, executed a cousin and deported his brother and an uncle, both of whom died in concentration camps. Beside being among France's most decorated wartime heroes, Renault was also one of the country's most prolific and popular historians of the resistance. Goetz, an inventor credited with perfecting affordable techniques to desalinate ocean water and to cool railroad cars, has died in Phoenix at 93. Goetz, whose business interests ranged from bee-keeping and waxed paper to uranium mining, died Wednesday. In addition to his industrial activities, Goetz, who bought nearly 3,000 stands of bees during World War once was known as the West's largest honey exporter. And in 1922, he opened Arizona's first uranium mine near Four Corners. In 1926, he started a company to make waxed paper and later moved it to Salinas, where it is now known as the Salinas Valley Wax Paper Co.

Designed Cooler Goetz in 1954 designed a vacuum cooler for shipping produce which lowered temperatures in two railroad cars at once. With G. A. Houseman of Phoenix, he developed and marketed a device to take salt out of ocean water at a cost of $34 an acre-foot. Goetz also owned three hotels at various times and was an early backer of the Phoenix Symphony.

Woodrow Parfrey, a popular character actor who was featured in "Dirty Harry" and "Papillon" among other major movies, died of a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles, family members said Sunday. He was 61. Born in New York City Oct. 5, 1922, Parfrey was orphaned as a teen-ager. He joined the Army in World War II and was injured and captured in the Battle of the Bulge, serving the last year of the war in a German prisoner of war camp and earning a Purple Heart and Silver Star.

The POW experience and his Depression poverty helped him create the rough-hewn character roles that became his trademark. Parfrey studied drama at the New School for Social Research and began his acting career on Broadway. Proudest of his work on the legitimate stage, he was featured during the 1950s in "Advise and Consent," "Room Service," "The Rehearsal" and "The Tiger and the Typist."
