Sculptor Killed Before Completing Figurehead By BETTY GOODWIN It may have seemed strange when the voluptuous actress Catherine Bach, star of CBS-TVs "The Dukes of Hazzard." was chosen after a lengthy search last fall to pose for the figurehead on the Californian. the sailing ship that will lead the Tallship Olympic Parade of Sail TOPSail '84 from Marina del Rey to Huntington Beach on July 4. Since Phoenician times, figureheads have served as good-luck omens to preserve the safety of a ship. Deities, serpents, birds, mermaids, statesmen, warriors and mythological figures have all been used to adorn ships' prows.

But there has probably never been a TV star figurehead, even if she would be impersonating Queen Calafia, the legendary Amazon-like woman who ruled the mythical island after which California was probably named. However, when the ship is christened Monday in San Diego by California First Lady Gloria Deukmejian. there won't be any sign of Bach's shape adorning the vessel. Lyle Galloway, the marine artist who was carving Bach's good-luck image, was killed March 31 in a boating accident off Newport Beach. Galloway had completed a small model of the figurehead days before his death, but he never had a chance to begin carving the life-size bust itself.

"I saw the preliminary carving for the first time on a Thursday, and I was to meet with Lyle that Sunday to get the final measurements so he could start carving, but he didn't show up." said Steve Christman. director and founder of the Nautical Heritage Museum at Dana Point, which is sponsoring the Californian. Galloway drowned that Saturday. In August, a committee of five was formed at the museum to conduct a search for a woman to pose as Calafia. Since there would no doubt be "no end of pretty girls" coming forth.

Christman explained, the committee decided that the model should meet four criteria: She should display an interest in youth programs (after her maiden voyage on Labor Day. the Californian will go into duty as a cadet training vessel); have "some historical connection somehow" with the state: possess "some connection with dual heritage." and be "really attractive." Catherine Bach was nominated by museum supporter and "Dukes of Hazzard" co-star Denver Pyle. As a former national youth ambassador for the March of Dimes, she proved her interest in youth programs. She traces her ancestry to California's land-grant Verdugo family, thus satisfying her historical connection with the state. Her maternal grandparents are Mexican, which gives her dual heritage.

And with her classic features and flowing locks. Christman said, "she had the look we were after. I think she comes pretty close to what you'd imagine" on the bow of a ship. To complete the carving. Christman interviewed dozens of artists and finally decided on Frank James Morgan, a San Diego sculptor specializing in female figures.
