DEPARTMENT MAKES RUN Bat Finds That Elmer Whittaker Had Beat Them to It A Good Getaway. Huntington fire laddies made one of the best runs and the longest In several months Thursday evening about 9:10, when the gasoline stove at the Eli Blaugh home on Jackson street started leaking and caught fire. The call was sent in by tele phone. A long hard run ensued to Jack son street. When they got there the fire had been and at 60 they returned to the station.

The stove was leaking unknown to Mrs. Blaugh, who was in the front of her home and was unaware of the fire until she smelled wood burning. call was sent to the fire depart ment but before they got there Elmer Whittaker, a neighbor, ran in, grabg bed a bucket of wafer and threw it onto the blaze: The fire had started up the unplastered lath and would have resulted In quite a blaze had it not been extinguished Immediately. No damage could be set, as the woodwork was lust slightly smoked. The run was exceptionally hard on the horses because of the distance.

Announcement was author ized of the postponement, but a tele gram reached Maro Knight, president, while he was In Huntington, late in the afternoon that the goods would be shipped in time to reach Laketon Friday noon. Packer, a captain in the British army during the Boer war and an expert formerly in the employe of the DeBeers in South Africa, who haa been prospecting for a number of months in Montgomery county, Texas, Is showing a number of specimens of diamonds that he has secured. These are very rough and full of flaws, hence have but little commercial value, but they are indicative, so Packer declares, of pure gems which may be found. pacKer attention was attracted to America by hearing that diamonds had been found In Ar kansas. He came to that part of the country first, and then, following what is known as the geological drift far down Into the state of Texas, found diamonds on the surface, just as he had figured, these having been thrown np, so he by volcanic dis turbances.

While, his dlscoverey Is of but little value commercially, It tfddB emphasis to the fact that there is a diamond field in Arkansas extending far down into the state of Texas. It is Packer's intention to work the lead he has discovered more thoroughly and he is quite optimistic about results. KENDALL ACCEPTS A NEW JERSEY POSITION Calvin' N. Kendall, superintendent of the Indianapolis city schools, has sent to Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey, a telegram, accepting the appointment of commissioner of education of the state of New Jersey. the last New Jersey legislature and the sal ary is $10,000 a year. Mr. Kendall'i salary in Indianapolis is 46,000. He will not leave to take his new position until September. He has been superintendent in Indianapolis eleven years, and In that time has refused numerous offers to go elsewhere.
