Monday, December 3, III 9 Ebe Angeles gunes PRO FOOTBALL "When I was in the NFL, it was a thrill knocking people down. Now, it's a thrill to pick them up." "I used to earn a living the hard way knocking down running backs and receivers. Loved every minute of it. too. Now, I get a kick out of picking people up and into one of the world's finest motorcars.

It's a different game but I'm still with a winning team." Forced to Go on the Defensive, 49ers Still Win San Francisco Makes Big Plays Out of Turnovers to Defeat Falcons, 35-17 Sidney Williams Linebacker NFL, 1964-70 Sales Executive Mercedes Benz, 1979-84 Mercedes-Bej az noiiywooainc. 4i Sunset -West of Vine (23)466-3141 WORLD CUP SOCCER aeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaeeaeaaaeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaei A-M I From Times Wire Services ATLANTA "We knew the defense had to come up with the big plays, and we made a few," the San Francisco 49ers Dana McLemore said. It was more than a few as the 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons, 35-17, Sunday. It was seven, to be exact six turnovers and a blocked punt The 49ers, reeling off their sixth straight victory and their ninth in a row on the road, clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. McLemore scored on a 54-yard interception return, and Gary Johnson scooped up a fumble and raced 33 yards for another score by the 49er defense.

"We were lucky the defense picked up some big plays," said Joe Montana, who threw two touchdown passes for an otherwise sputtering San Franciso attack that had three turnovers of its own. The Falcons fell to 3-11, losing their eighth game in a row one shy of the club record. Montana, who completed 12 of 24 passes for 165 yards, had one touchdown pass called back by a penalty and saw another possible score fall through Earl Cooper's hands in the end zone. Atlanta took an early 3-0 lead on Mick Luckhurst's 32 -yard field goal and got its touchdowns on a two-yard run by Gerald Riggs and a 48-yard pass from Mike Moroski to Alfred Jackson, who had a career-high 11 receptions for 193 yards, a single-game club record. Riggs rushed for 133 yards on 30 attempts; Moroski completed 22 of 43 for 289 yards but was the victim of five turnovers three interceptions and two fumbles.

Riggs had the other fumble near the end of the first half. The victory was the first in Atlanta for the 49ers since 1977 and enabled them to score a season sweep over the Falcons for the first time since 1974. San Francisco wrapped lip its third NFC West crown in four years with a 24-17 victory over Tampa Bay last week. With the defense turning in the big plays throughout the day, the San Francisco offense sputtered, netting only 64 yards and four first downs in the second half. The 49ers wasted two other nice returns by McLemore 29 yards with a punt to the Atlanta 44 in the first quarter and 50 yards to the Falcons 39 with a kickoff in the second.

Ray Wersching had a 46-yard field-goal try fall away after hitting the left upright in the third quarter and had a 47-yard attempt blocked by Buddy Curry in the final quarter. "If we (offense) continue to play the way we are, we're not going to go anywhere in the playoffs," Montana said. "We have got to play better." Johnson, scoring for the third time in a 10-year career, said of his play that gave the 49ers a 21-10 halftime lead, "I just saw it laying there, and when I picked it up, I saw nothing but touchdown." "This team wins in different ways every week," said Keena Turner, who set up Roger Craig's five-yard touchdown with an eight-yard interception return to the Atlanta nine. "Today, we won with lots of individuals." Montana's scoring passes came in the first half 64 yards to Freddie Solomon and six yards to Dwight Clark as the NFC West champions improved their record to 13-1, marking only the 14th time in NFL history that a team has won 13 or more regular-season games. boiiseum TUESDAY DEC. 4 6:30 P.M. 8:00 P.M. mm 7F Bills Hold On to Beat Colts, 21-15, Before 20,693 FOR INFORMATION CALL (213) 413-3951 PRESENTED BY mexicana Mare Mexico, Mare Ways. LA OPINION Spanish Newspaper Since 1926 Buffalo was forced to punt with 1:45 left in the game, but the kick was dropped by the Colts' Larry Anderson and recovered by Buffalo's Joe Azelby at the Colt 18.

The Colts got the ball back with two seconds left in the game, but a desperation pass was intercepted by Buffalo defensive back Charles Romes. Dufek completed 11 of 22 passes for 164 yards, while Schlichter completed 11 of 22 for 135 yards. Each quarterback had a pass With about a minute left in the first half, Colt quarterback Art Schlichter threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to running back Frank Middleton to cut Buffalo's halftime lead to 21-9. The Colts got a 28-yard field goal by kicker Raul Allegre at 5:51 of the third quarter to make it 21-12. The Colts drove to the Buffalo four-yard line early in the final quarter but again had to settle for an Allegre field goal, this one from 21 yards, to narrow the gap to 21-15 at 5:12.

From Times Wire Services ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.-Joe Dufek didn't think he had a good second half. Unfortunately for the Indianapolis Colts, Dufek had a pretty good first half Sunday to lead the Buffalo Bills to a 21 -15 victory. "I didn't throw the ball as well in the second half as I did in the first half," said Dufek, who started at quarterback for the Bills in place of the benched Joe Ferguson. "But we held on." The game was played before 20,693 fans at Rich Stadium, the smallest crowd for a Bills regular-season game since the stadium opened in 1973. Dufek threw two touchdown passes in the opening 15 minutes when the Bills (2-12) did all their scoring.

"We came out smoking; we had a good week of work," Dufek said. "We tried to get a big emotional surge at the beginning of the game, and we finally did it," said Bills running back Greg Bell, who carried 30 times for 83 yards and one touchdown. While the Bills were firing on all cylinders offensively in the first half, the Colts gave Coach Frank Kush fits. "The first half was a disaster," said Kush, whose team dropped to 4-10. "Our offense is just inconsistent.

We cannot out-execute anyone. "Take the first five or six minutes away," said Colt defensive end Donnell Thompson, "and we played a very good game." Buffalo built its lead on a seven -yard touchdown by Bell at 4:11 of the opening period and enjoyed a 14-0 advantage at the 12:21 mark when Dufek threw an 18-yard scoring pass to tight end Tony Hunter. The Bills scored at the end of the first quarter on a 64-yard touchdown pass play from Dufek to wide receiver Byron Franklin. Indianapolis got a safety at 1:07 of the second quarter when Buffalo's Donald Wilson fielded a punt but was tackled in his end zone by the Colts' George Radachowsky. iPi! 08 '84 300 TIIRFtn niFSFI 393 plus tax.
