South Carolina quarterback Todd Ellis didn't care that he passed for more than 300 yards Saturday or that he lost three fumbles in one half in the Gamecocks' 40-10 win over Virginia Tech at Williams-Brice Stadium. "I'd like to get 300 yards every time," he said.

"But I didn't throw any interceptions, so write that down." Ellis completed 25 of 41 attempts for a season-high 334 yards and a touchdown. But what mattered most was that he had no passes picked off for the first time in his collegiate career, ending a streak of 15 games in which he had at least one. The Gamecocks (3-2) sputtered early, starting with Ellis' fumble on the game's first play from scrimmage, but won their 13th straight homecoming game before 73,150, their largest homecoming crowd in history. Wingback Sterling Sharpe scored three touchdowns and placekicker Collin Mackie kicked four field goals and four extra points as the Gamecocks rolled up 516 yards in total offense. "I don't know if we were af the emotional peak we were at in the last couple of weeks," South Carolina coach Joe Morrison said, referring to narrow defeats to Georgia and Nebraska, "but I don't think we were flat.

Turnovers in the first half kind of got us in a bind, but we got that straightened out" Ellis' first fumble, at the Gamecocks' 36, didn't hurt The Hokies (1-4) were able to move the ball only three yards and Chris Kinzer's 52-yard field goal attempt fell short and wide right Three plays later, Ellis threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Ryan Bethea less than three minutes into the game. In the second quarter, Ellis fumbled twice, leading to both Virginia Tech scores. He fumbled at the Gamecocks' 42 after a two-yard loss. The Hokies capitalized, Earnie Jones scaring on a four-yard run. Ellis' fumble at the Gamecocks' 27 late in the half led to Kinzer's 19-yard field goal as the half ended.

Even with the miscues, South Carolina led 21-10. "I didn't feel we played bad at all in the first half," Ellis said. "It was a matter of us taking control. (Center) Woody Myers had trouble snapping the ball. He has bad ligaments in his fingers.

They're torn, torn, torn, and he had some tape on them." Th Associated Press OFF AND RUNNING: South Carolina's Keith Bing (26) finds running room against Virginia Tech. Hoyle, who has now kicked 12 straight field goals, got his first of the game with 6:34 left in the first quarter. With Wake stalled at UNC's 13, he lifted a 30-yarder.

Wake and Hoyle then began to follow a familiar script: Elkins would drive the Deacons deep into Tar Heel territory and Hoyle's tireless right leg would swing true. Early in the second period Wake moved 72 yards, ending with a Hoyle 24-yard field goal. In the same period Hoyle boomed a 41-yarder, culminating a nine-play, 55-yard drive to make it 16-0 Wake. Maye rallied the Heels to a nine-play, 83-yard scoring march, freshman tailback Reggie Clark getting the touchdown from five yards out Ellis said the Virginia Tech defense was jumping offside in antici- Fation the snap, contributing to the umbles. "The ref didn't see it that way," Ellis said, "but when I go back and look at the films, I'll see (the offside) again." Mackie's 16 points kicking broke a 10-year-old Gamecocks record.

Sharpe's three touchdowns on a pair of three-yard runs and a 17-yard run tied the South Carolina record for touchdowns scored. He also caught four passes, giving him at least one reception in 27 consecutive games. "This week, we really got it together," he said. "The offensive line was doing a good job for us. We had a few letdowns when we got close to the goal line, but we finally got things going and put the points we needed on the board." zone.

It all added up to a trium- ihant homecoming for Bill Doo-ey, Wake Forest's first-year coach and the younger brother of Georgia coach Vince Dooley. He coached Carolina 11 seasons (1967-77), compiling a 69-53-2 record that is second only to present coach Dick Oram's 70-38-3 mark on UNC's all-time ledger. "This is a beautiful place to Elay football," Dooley said after is first game at Kenan Stadium since a 13-13 tie in 1977 between his Tar Heels and Clemson. "I've been carried off the field before here (after wins). But this is the first time from the other side.

But I'd rather talk about this football team. "I can't say enough about this team. They don't do it pretty, but a victory over a very good North Carolina team is a credit to our players. They gave outstanding effort on every down against a big, strong team. Then, Dooley added as an afterthought "Well this one was pretty." After spending nine mostly successful seasons at Virginia Tech, Dooley has his first Deacons team off to its best start since Peahead Walker's 1944 team went 8-1.

On a perfect sky-blue day, matching the color of Carolina's jerseys, Wake Forest went to work early. After the Tar Heels won the toss and chose to kick off, Proehl returned it 42 yards to the Wake Forest 42. Elkins went to work, and three minutes, 58 yards and six plays later the Deacons had their only touchdown. Rogers, until now a third-string tailback, gained eight yards on the left side, Chip Rives ran for six, and then Elkins found Proehl with a 40-yard pass to Success depends on bullet expansion. 2 Success depends on bullet I I I I penetration.

That team is Wake Forest undefeated Wake Forest a 22-14 upset winner over North Carolina Saturday before 50,500 disbelieving fans at Kenan Stadium. The Demon Deacons, 12-point underdogs, were led by Wilson Hoyle, a 5-foot-ll, 167-pound sophomore placekicker from just up the road in Henderson, N.C.

He booted five field goals, a Wake Forest and Kenan Stadium record. But Wake Forest (5-0 overall, 2-0 in the ACC) could never have won this one without the strong right arm of Mike Elkins. The Junior quarterback carved up the Tar Heels (3-3, 1-1) all afternoon, either passing to wingback Ricky Proehl and split end Steve Brown, or tossing the option smartly to I-backs Tony Rogers and Daryl McGill. Martin Bailey kept Carolina constantly backed up near its own doorstep with booming punts. Meanwhile, a swarming Deacons defense led by linebacker Jlmmie Simmons, tackle Kelly Vaughan and nose guard Terry Smith hounded Carolina quarterback Mark Maye, sacking him five times.

Maye, however, managed to stage a furious Tar Heel rally in the fourth quarter that nearly gave his team an opportunity to gain a tie. His 41-yard fourth-down pass to flanker Quinton Smith for a touchdown with 9:02 left made it 22-14, and he nearly hit end Eric Lewis for a touchdown on the game's last play.
