By Gerry Yandel Staft writer The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the same group that played a part in CBS newsman Andy Rooney's February suspension from "60 Minutes," is giving him an award. Unfortunately for the curmudgeonly commentator, it's a citation for "defamatory broadcast news or editorial." It's a cinch he won't attend the April 29 awards ceremony in New York. Mr. Rooney was suspended for three months for allegedly making racist and anti-gay remarks. He was reinstated after three weeks.

Other GLAAD chastisements go to rock groups Guns N' Roses and Skid Row, both for anti-gay lyrics, and comedians Sam Kini-son, Damon Wayans and Andrew Dice Clay for anti-gay jokes. Cosmopolitan magazine earned an award for "defamatory print feature" for fostering gay stereotypes in an article about bisexual-ity; Patrick Buchanan and William F. Buckley Jr. were cited for "defamatory print news or editorial." Not all the awards are derog atory. Phil Donahue was named "media person of the year" for excellence in coverage and support of gay and lesbian concerns.

Several TV programs were applauded for presenting gays in a fair light, including: CBS's "Doctor, Doctor," now on hiatus, for the inclusion of a gay character and the episode "Torch Song Cardiology," about a friendship between a gay man and a straight man. NBC's "LA Law" for an episode with a subplot about a gay Olympic athlete whose contract as a breakfast cereal spokesman was revoked after he came out of the closet ABC's "thirtysomething" for an episode showing the relationship between two gay men. The episode resulted in some sponsors withdrawing advertising. Fox Broadcasting's "The Tracey Ullman Show," for the skit "Francesca" about a teenager, her gay father and his live-in love.
