Jr. ROTC cadets collect $44,724 By Bemadette Burden Staff writer cf Board picks name: North Atlanta High By Bemadette Burden Staff writer The Atlanta Board of Education has approved the name North Atlanta High School for the new school replacing Northside and North Fulton high schools. Superintendent Lester Butts said last week that the name will be used at the start of the 1991-92 school year when students from both Northside and North Fulton begin attending classes at the present North Fulton High campus, 2890 North Fulton Drive N.E. The students will be housed at the North Fulton campus for two years until collecting $8,511 the largest collection by a single high school. CoL Bobby Moore, director of Army Instruction for city schools, said the cadets make good collectors for the charity drive because people "feel safe" giving money to them.

"Most of the other organizations participating don't use cadets for the collection," Colonel Moore said. "The uniforms really make a difference. People feel more comfortable giving to the cadets because they bring a reassurance to contributors that their gift is going to the right place." Colonel Moore said three collection cans were snatched from student volunteers this year, but that otherwise the 1,000 student participants reported few problems. renovations and expansions are completed on the Northside campus at 2875 Northside Drive N.W. The school board's decisions surrounding North Atlanta have been few and slow in coming after its decision to close one of the schools and merge them divided both school communities.

The school board so far has named North Fulton Principal Joseph Carpenter as principal of North Atlanta, and the board said North Fulton's International Studies and Northside's Performing Arts magnet programs will be housed in the new high school. Last June the school board voted to close North Fulton and merge it with Northside after dwindling enrollments could not justify keeping the Buckhead school open.
