But Westlake (16-8) found itself on the end of an unlucky draw Monday, having to play St Pius at St Pius in the quarterfinal round. Despite its 10-14 record entering the game, lOth-seeded St Pius trailed only once, at 64, and went on to eliminate Westlake 85-77. In the other boys game, top-seeded Marist (22-1), the No. 1-ranked team in the state, struggled early with rival Westminster (6-16) but pulled away for a 63-48 victory. St Pius took control of its game by closing the first quarter with a 10-0 run for a 21-12 lead.

Center Matt Fry, who had a career-high 33 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots against taller Westlake opponents, had three baskets to spark the key spurt Fry shot 15-for-21 from the field and 3-for4 from the line. Westlake, which got 21 points from Jason Fleetwood and 16 from Del Collier, closed to within a point three times, but could never retake the lead. Fleetwood scored to cut the margin to 73-72 with just under three minutes left But Eric Damm, who scored 12 points, hit a layup to give St Pius a three-point lead, and point guard Jason Rash clinched the game at the free-throw line. Rash, who scored 23 points, made 10 of 10 free throws in the final 1:37 to end any hope for Westlake, which had defeated St Pius 76-69 and 83-73 during the regular season. "We played well from the opening tip to the final buzzer," said St Pius coach Mark Kelly.

"We felt like we could take the ball inside and we did. Fry played great heck, they all did. I'm very excited thinking about being one win away from the state tournament" Marist trailed 36-34 midway the third quarter against an inspired Westminster team, but the War Eagles closed with eight straight points to take a 42-36 lead into the fourth period. Marist then clinched the game by making seven of nine field goals and seven of eight free throws in the final quarter. Derek Waugh led the War Eagles with 24 points.

Blair Ford had 13, Andrew Wellman 12 and Jeff Blount 11. Jim Thompson le'd Westminster with 19 points, while Malcolm Turner had 12 points and eight rebounds. In the girls bracket, second-seeded Marist (19-3) struggled past seventh-seeded Westminster (9-13) 31-30, while top-seeded St Pius (22-1) coasted past eighth-seeded Chamblee (10-15) 71-50. Junior forward Marion McCauley, who had missed three of her previous five free-throw attempts, made one of two with one second remaining to give Marist the victory over a very deliberate Westminster team. McCauley scored all three of her points in the final quarter.

Front Page IE At 16, Rivera so impressed Snyder during a 15-min-ute workout in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, that the Braves immediately signed him to a contract Placed on a vitamin supplement diet, Rivera has since grown three inches and 45 pounds to 6 feet .6, 210 pounds while adding movement and velocity to his fastball.

Rivera went 9-11 with a 3.17 ERA at Class A Sumter last year before going 5-3 with a 3.64 ERA against more experienced opposition in the Dominican winter league considered low Class AAA quality. The Braves consider Rivera two years away from reaching major-league caliber. Larry Jaster, Sumter's pitching coach last season, considers Rivera and Dennis Burlin-game, who will likely start this season at Class AA Greenville, even at this stage. "I think this is a good situation to be in," Rivera said through pitcherinterpreter Jose Alvarez. "I have no control over the situation.

It happened and there's nothing I can do about it" Rivera combines immaculate mechanics, an overhand delivery and command of a low, tailing fastball. He struck out 99 while walking only 52 in 173 innings at Sumter. Rivera has come far since being signed as a malnourished product of a poverty climate. "You can't lose a guy like that" says Nixon. "We'd take him back in a minute." The schedule already conspires against the Braves.

By beginning the season with 10 games in as many days, the Braves must leave spring training with five starters. Carrying Rivera would further burden an uncertain bullpen. The team lost 10 starters and 31 lettermen after the 1987 season but posted its fourth straight winning season with nine victories. Woods, a native of Oneida, was a four-year football letterman at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. He played two seasons as quarterback and two at defensive back, the position at which he was named all-conference twice. Woods began his coaching career at Tennessee in 1976, working with the secondary. He made stops at Kansas, North Alabama and Iowa State before coming to Appalachian State in January 1983 as offensive coordinator.

Thirteen months later, he was named head coach, replacing Mack Brown, and at age 30 became the youngest head coach in Division I-A and I-AA. Satterfield, a 1962 South Carolina graduate, was considered a strong candidate because his Furman team won the I-AA national championship last December. It is believed, however, that South Carolina wanted a younger coach. He will turn 50 on Nov. 11.

Chaump will turn 53 on April 28. Al Groh, who served as the Gamecocks' offensive coordinator last season before being reassigned to quarterbacks coach in January, resigned Monday to accept a position as linebackers coach with the New York Giants. Groh is the fifth South Carolina assistant to leave since the end of last season. The Associated Press contributed to this report I rs uM, gummy Japan wyvii, ivnyu, ryin Gun. Hamburo.
