dDEEQ By NAT D. WILLIAMS Sit right doun With a mug of And 111 tell you About a mighty That's strictly A Few Short Been I MEMPHIS Down on Beale Street the boys in black, beige, and brown keep up a running consumption of beer. Now, the Corner realizes that the foregoing statement of fact is I not necessarily unique unless one is concerned with the volume of consumption. a bit difficult for the layman to figure out the number of barrels of the amber hued liquid which are consumed per diem on the street where the blues began. Believe it was Shakespeare who wrote something about "To suckle fools, and chronicle small beer." Well, his reference won't al 0 together hold on Indigo Avenue.

"Small" beers are not too popular on Beale Street, unless one considers a quart small. i The subject of beer came up the other day after some of the boys in a popular rainbow cafe started roistering their reactions to the presence of well known Herbert Gaines, Mid western regional representative of a large beer company. Mr. Gaines represents a new, and increasingly important addition to tho flora and fauna of streets like Beale. He is a significantly successful member of that growing group of young "New Negroes," who have discovered the powerful possibilities and opportunities in the field of distribution, as salesmen.

Gaines is a member in good standing of that growing body of alert and intelligent Negroes who have accepted the challenge posed in the cultivation of the great American Negro market. They have "sold" themselves to the heads of big; business concerns, which in the best American tradition, are willing and anxious to find ever expanding markets. Men like Gaines serve as interpreters of the vast Negro market to the expanding number of American businesses who are beginning to recognize this hitherto neglected area of buying bodies. Gaines and his fellow sales representatives bridge the gap between th a white producer and the Negro consumer. In tho process they do an educational job in two directions at once.

They put the producer hep to a lot of the facts of life as lived by a colored man. They do a good job of demonstrating that Negroes are not freaks in their consuming habits that instead of being an incurable catfish addict, the Negro is more inclined to select caviar. Smart colored fellows like Gaines are demonstrating that in the field of distribution, the Negroes sales representative is a good investment. The result is more and better jobs for more and better Negroes in ever widening cir FOAMY FIGURES Illustrative of. the educational job among Negioes, fellows like Herbert Gaines are doing, are some of the reactions of Beale Streeters to certain facts Gaines' activities in this area have brought out.

For instance. Beale Streeters are distinguishing between dry and sweet beers. They get into heated discussions over the differences between bitter beer, i black beer, near beer, lager beer," small beer and even Weiss beer. Clever Iferbert Gaines has been the instigator of much of this talk. He never gets too much involved.

He just drops hints nndTades." It was inevitable that in the Headquarters TNv'pnty eighth Transportation Battalion (TR), APO 403 A The Sixty ninth Transportation Medium Truck Company hung up tremendous accomplishment recently by operating 462.516 miles and" moving 8,381 tons of material during a three month period. This was accomplished during the railroad strike in France. Capt Abbott R. Jones of Pasadena, is commanding officer. CAMP IRWIN.

Calif. Corp. Alphonso King, recently se lected as "Sol: dier of the "Month" at Camp Irwin, was photog aphed by a Courier camera man enjoying fhe beautiful settings of the Rubaiyat Room of Hotel a i in L. A. ROME, N.

Y.SSgt Willie i here beer. a tale big sale on the ball! WILLY course of events, some smart cat would endeavor to show up tha other guy's Ignorance and establish his own erudition by asking the simple question, "What is beer, Mac, since you're so smart?" And Mack was smart. First filling his glass with a famous brew, taking a sip and smacking his lips, Mac, beguiled the gathering with his intonation about "beer is a fermented liquor made fiom any farinaceous grain, but generally barley, whicli is first malted and ground, and its fermentable substance then extracted by hot water. This extract or infusion is boiled in cauldrons, and hops or some other substance of an agreeable bitterness added. The liquor is then suffered to ferment in vats that, Mah Deah Jackson, is beer, Suh!" And thanks further to Gaines, the Corner now knows that there are some 300 Negro owned and oierated places of business in Memphis and surrounding area which serve as "beer outlets." In other words, there are that many Negro establishments dispensing the foamy suds for thirsty ebony hued gullets.

Gaines, and men like him, are gathering up worlds of hitherto unsuspected facts about the Negro's consuming habits. They are learning a lot in turn from the white business executives and salesmen for whom they work and with wTiom they are competing. They are picking up a lot of selling "know how." They are also serving as inspirations to other young Negroes, who note their cool appearance, their aauve manners, their good English, and their Vomparatively fat take home pay. The women go for such guys in a great, big way, too, Mac believe the Corner. The Corner sees the lightning in them eyes.

A LA BABSOX But off the grin for a moment, the Corner would like to recall that it was last October, when Roger W. Bab son, ubiquitous and perennial commentator on the American economic scene for the public prints, slashed out with an article on the selling field, which seems pertinent to the Corner's purposes here. Mr. Babson wrote. "The real orprtunities of the next decade will be in connection with selling the new ideas which are now on drawing boards and in test tubes.

Hence, were I a young man today, I would take a course in business administration. "Successful salesmanship, however, is a very difficult and tedious" task. It requires ffreat courage and tremendous jiersistency. There are no opportunities in business administration for the pencil pusher or the clock watcher.
