MAY 3, 1990 tllic Atlanta AND CONSTITUTION G-9 AUTO RACING GOLF Charlotte Motor Speedway owner 'positive9 about purchasing AIR lR Spring break over; LPGA back at play By Tom McCollister Staff writer The King Of Caps SCRATCH DENT SALE May 3rd to May 26th File Fiberglass Bedliner Aluminum By Bill Robinson Staff writer CHARLOTTE, N.C. Bruton Smith, owner of Charlotte Motor Speedway, says he "remains positive" about purchasing Atlanta International Raceway (AIR) despite failing in an earlier effort. "I think it will happen in the next two weeks, three weeks at the most," said Smith. "I felt like I already bought it. The lawyers thought it.

We had negotiated everything down to Mr. Walter Nix's signature." Nix and L.G. DeWitt own 90 percent of AIR, a publicly held corporation that has never declared a dividend. The selling price is expected to range between $20 and $22 million. Smith's February bid for AIR fell through.

A bid for the track by Roger Penske, who owns Indy car race teams and tracks in Nazareth, and Brooklyn, last September was turned down. Nix, AIR's board chairman, indicated that "being fair to our minority stockholders" is what held up the February sale of the 30-year-old, 502-acre raceway at Hampton. DeWitt, of Ellerbe, N.C, is AIR president and also owner of the mile track at Rockingham. Nix and DeWitt are building a new Winston Cup garage at the 1.522-mile track that is the circuit's third-swiftest track behind Talladega and Daytona. The new garage, mandated by NASCAR to be ready for the Atlanta Journal 500 on Nov.

While the PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour have experienced huge crowds and exciting finishes the last three weeks, the women pros have been resting, evening out their tans, visiting family and working on their games. They haven't played since April 4.

There was a scheduled off week, then two unscheduled ones as tournament officials in Los Angeles and St. Petersburg, were unable to secure sponsors and LPGA officials were unable to come up with replacements. Centinela Hospital dropped the Los Angeles event and USX pulled out of the St. Petersburg tournament, which had been the longest-running LPGA tournament, dating to 1954, and counted among its champions eight of the 11 LPGA Hall of Fame members. "Yes, we've lost some tournaments and I expect that type of turnover will continue," said LPGA commissioner Bill Blue.

"We have to become a much stronger marketing organization, and we will." Blue, in his second full season as commissioner, said the LPGA added nine tournaments and lost seven this year, resulting in a 38-week schedule. He called the loss of the Los Angeles and St. Peters- BEAIRB Kollis Stacy says the jury is still out on commissioner Bill Blue. burg tournaments "a fluke, a one-year variation." "Since I have become commissioner, we have established a very aggressive program of seeking out sponsors interested in long-term relations with our association," Blue said. "We are going through a period of growing pains.

I'm not worried." Some members of the LPGA are willing to go along with Blue's assessment of growing pains. Others have complained that Blue is unqualified for the job but none wishes to be quoted by name. "It doesn't look good for us to have open dates in the heart of the golf season," said Hollis Stacy, "but these things happen. What's more important is how we come out of it. Is the Tour going to be stronger because of it? The jury's still out on the job that Bill is doing, but I think we have to give him time." Now that the spring break is over, LPGA members are excited to be playing again.

It begins today at the Hermitage Country Club with a field that includes this year's top 25 money winners.
