AN OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK. Farmer's Guide Special Correspond ence Tersely Sams Up Live Stock SItnatlon, Hogs are now universally looked upon as good property, and It is generally thought that the best grade will sell later at 7 per 100 pounds, as matured droves are growing scarcer all the time throughout the feeding districts, says the Farmer's Guide. Gradually stockmen are com ing to view the future optimistically, while still seeing the wisdom of mar keting their swine as soon as they are well matured. The Bpread in prices, between the ordinary light weights and choice heavy hogs Is still extremely wide and sales are much wide rapart than in former winters. This state of things is easily under stood when it is explained that the recent receipts at the Chicago stock yards have averaged in weight but 204 pounds, compared with 214 pounds' a year ago, 222 pounds two years ago and 219 pounds three years ago.

The main strength of the market lies in the demands of eastern shippers, and also in the good de mands of the Chicago independent packers, who have for some time past been much larger buyers, especially of the heavy hogs, than formerly, Hogs were marketed much less freely last week than usual, owing to the bad country roads and the unwilling ness of many farmers to sell under $6 on the farm. At the close hogs sold at $5.80 to $6.70, compared with $5.55 to $6.45 a week earlier, $4.15 to $4.55 a year ago and $6.80 to $7.05 two years ago. As shown by the Cincinnati Price Current, the week's western slaughtering Is 725,000 hogs, compared with 750,000 the preceding week and 760,000 two weeks ago. For the corresponding time last year the number was 910,000 and two years ago 615,000 there being a decrease of 185,000 In comparison with last year. From November 1 the total Is 8,755,000, against 7,405,000 a year ago, an increase of 1,350,000 hogs.
