Creating much cinematic stir among critics and highly selective prevue audiences, "The Quiet One," challenge to mediocrity, Is the story of a child's bewilderment a Harlem youngster, unloved and unwanted, who runs so far away from himself till he comes faco to face with, his own heart. thereby finding his particular niche society. Produced by Film Documents, the picture is the story, as well, of four young people, who incorporated their time, dreams, talents and money to make the production pos sible. The (16mm) classic, which cost $30,000, was begun when photographer Helen Levitt, her brother William, and a friend, Janice Loeb, interested Sidney Meyers in an idea they had for a drama film concerning a Harlem child.

Com bining their various, professional experiences, the script was rewrit ten with the Interested assistance of the Wiltwyck School for Boys, Dr. Viola Bernard, the school's psychiatrioconsultant working with the writers. SETTING UP SHOP Renting a cold water flat in a tenement at 112th Street and First Avenue, the producers began to look for boy to play the lead. The Negro youth had to be Just right, for he had to qualify for any "lost" boy in any part of the world, race and class boundaries forgotten. They found 12 year old Donald Thompson among a group of boys who were at a friend's home in East Harlem.

The search of seven weeks being completed, and the entire neighborhood bent only to please and. assist however they could, the documentary film was begun and lasted through the win ter and summer of 1947 4S. IHV AND MISS Since Donald's father Insisted the boy not miss school, filming was done after school hours, week ends and during vacations, with many jaunts to and from tbe Wilt wyck School in Esopus, N. where certain scenes were filmed with the boys and personnel of the corrective school. The film, which runs sixty seven minutes, include Clarence Cooper as the counsellor, Sadie Stockton an E8telle Evans of NAG as the grandmother and mother, respec tively, with the staff of boys of the Wiltwyck School completing the cast.

The commentary by James Agee Is stirring and in Instances, movingly poetic, as is the original music by Ulysses Kay. Mayor and Burstyn, are distributing the film. MEL FREE THE IN6RAMS Eddie Vinson Tours Miss. NADDNOLA. Hiss.

What aeemed to be an unusual booking for Josh White, balladeer guitarist who was starred in the room that formerly operated on a Latin American format turned out to be a boon to the operators. Josh's folk lore doubled the crowds at the Embassy, drew entertain ment seekers from other segments than the usual following of the house fans who follow him where ever he appeara In Manhattan. Her unusual flair and ad roitness In the use of innuendo la made to order for tha smart sophisticates of the East Side supper clubs. Miguelito Valdes lent an able backing also with his band. Notwithstanding this. Josh White switched to the air and did a double deal. He sold bonds for Uncle Sam on the "Bands for Bonds' show over the Mutual Broadcasting System at 6:30 and later supported Josh Jr. In the television show "Adventure in Jars" over CBS TV at 8 P.

A lt7 2411 SR)h lilssli Ann, CMsao Is, O. I ALBUM Musical comedy music is usually a cut above the average popular tune, and Rodgers and Hart, as a am, were several cuts above aver age sons: writers. Lorenx Hart, of course, is dead, but Richard Rod gere continues his brilliant work with Oscar Hammerstein II. Rodgers and Hart gave Broadway many hit songs. Records have taken several of their best from the sound track of "Words and Music" and released them In album form, which should become a good seller those who like their music dressed up with lavish scores such as Lennle Hayton has dreamed up.

The list of names that won fame on the ecreen by their singing voices raises this album In stature. Stylish Lena Horne sings "Where Or When" and "The Lady Is a Tramp," the great Judy Garlnnd scores with Johnny One then teams with Mickey Rooney on "I Wish I Were In Love Again.1 June AUyson ehows her stare training in "Thou well." Betty Garrett is appealing In her ver sion of "There's a Small Hotel.1 and Ann Sothern sings "Where's That Rainbow?" All are top stars and gained their early fame as singers. Mickey Rooney sings "Manhattan." All the songs are taken from various Rodgers and Hart successes on Broadway in the twenties and thirties. This review is a bit late but that's not to bad considering that some of the songa are twenty years old and still highly llstenable. THE GREAT MR.

B. Billy Eckstlno Is doing a top Job in reviving old favorites. IIis National sides include "In a Sentimental Mood" and "My Silent Love" (National 9060). Billy does a bang up vocal on these sides and sounds real swoony. Kckstine does a mad rendition of "Bewildered" on the label.

Billy first waxed with Earl HInes on RCA Vlctor, then he formed his own crew and made tallow for National (releases still coming out), then Deluxe (still coming out), and finally for his present contractors, Records.
