He was 89. Mr.

Levine died Aug. 6 at the Motion Picture and Television Hos-; pital in the Woodland Hills area, the hospital reported Friday. He entered the film business at 20 as an independent distributor specializing in films rejected by the major studios. Seven years later he opened his own production company, Mascot Pictures, working out of an old North Hollywood studio once owned by Mack Sennett At Mascot he churned out 500 reels of serials, including three starring John Wayne. Under con-' tract to the studio were Mr.

Autry and fellow cowboy star Smiley Bur-v nette. It was there that Mr. Levin also came to the attention of Republic Film Laboratories owner Herbert J. Yates, who processed film for Mas-' cot and noticed it was one of the few small film companies turning a profit Mr. Yates formed Republic Pic-tures in 1935, and Mr.

Levine melded Mascot Pictures into the or-'" ganization. Mr. Levine eventually became head of the company, bringing to it his expertise in low-budget, com- mercially successful features and long-running adventure serials. Such films were Republic's mainstay until it gradually quit pro-duction after the advent of televi- sion. CBS purchased the studio's old North Hollywood headquarters in 1952 and renamed it Television City.
