'The Atlanta Journal The Atlanta Constitution GWINNETT EXTRA Monday, May 27, 1991 J3 Vietnam: Ex-pilot seeks national post "Please Have You Seen Me? Date Missing: Feb. 6th, 1987 bership are the same," he said. "I think my style of leadership, which is pretty much an open and upfront style, and my accessibility, is what the members seem to want." He said he did a lot of "spade work" before actually hitting the campaign trail. "I've been preparing for this a long time, but I really started campaigning in earnest in January," he said. "Since this is a national organization, we have members everywhere," he said.

"I've traveled all over. Basically I'm covering the entire United States." If he is elected, Mr. Myers's agenda will also include increasing the organization's membership and maximizing the involvement of members and their families. Continued from Jl feels strongly about. Mr.

Myers believes the government must consider paying "ransom" for the return of POWs or MIAs, whether it is in dollars or some other type of recognition. "Just in this last century, this country has had to deal with nations who won't turn over POWs and MIAs at cessation of hostilities," Mr. Myers said. "We have to deal with countries who don't share our same set of values." The Vietnam Veterans of America is the only congression-ally chartered veterans' organization devoted solely to Vietnam veterans and their families, according to Mr. Myers.

It has about 50,000 members. As president, Mr. Myers would have to move to Washington to serve at the national head- quarters for a two-year term. One of his duties would be to lobby for legislation benefiting veterans and their families. "We have a full-time legislative director, but the president is the organization's chief lobbyist, serving as a vital link between the Congress and the 600 or so chapters of the VVA," Mr.

Myers said. The election will be in August at the group's national convention in San Francisco. Mr. Myers said he doesn't want to underestimate his opponent, a Louisiana lawyer who also is campaigning vigorously, but he feels pretty confident of his chances. "I've spent a lot of time talking to members and I really feel that my idea of the most important issues and those of the mem D.O.B.

Guy uses a spare one to keep a log of all his phone calls to government officials. He has crisscrossed neighborhoods, interviewed his son's friends and waited for hours in restaurants for informants who failed to show up. Christopher Lee Garmon, 22, of 237 Sandra Drive was pulled over on traffic charges at a BP gas station on U.S. 29 in Lilburn about 3:30 a.m., police said.

When arresting Officer P.L. Rude tried to place him in the squad car, Mr. Garmon kicked him in the knee and resisted, according to police reports. Once the officer got him in the car, police said, the man kicked the door panel so hard he bent it. Mr.

swer, at least. He sought out the man in Bu-ford, he said, because he believed the man had the connections to find out what happened to his boy. The man told him to come back in a few days. When Mr. Guy returned to the Buford house, the man told him only that his son had been killed, Mr.

Guy said. "He told me not to ask any more questions." Mr. Guy pleaded for an answer. "He told me he'd been run through a tree shredder and thrown in the river," Mr. Guy said.

"And I believe him." "How could someone make something like that up?" Mrs. Guy asked. "It must be true." The Guys said they're convinced their son is dead. "I know he is," Mr. Guy said.

"Or he would have called by now." But Mr. Guy has not removed the hopeful poster from the back of his truck. He finishes one cigarette, lights another. "We used to go to church, but they didn't care. No one seems to care." From the other end of the sofa, his wife asked him to tell a visitor what their youngest son said: "Tell him what Derek said." Mr.

Guy teared up and shook his head no. His wife finished the thought. "Well, I'll tell it. He says, 'I wished I could help daddy to be happy Mr. Guy found his gravelly voice again.

"There's nothing to laugh about anyway." Mr. Guy said he got some counseling, and his wife thought it helped. "At least he started to open up about it." Colonel Rutledge said he thinks he understands the family's pain. "There's no climax to this," he said. "No end.
