B-4 JTIir Atlanta limnial AD CONSTTTTTION 25, 1990, Bio's once-over-Iightly tack aldn to tlie Walters style mm 'News at 10' expands to an hourlong broadcast i I A'. Continued from Bl think they're well-respected by folks inside the business and outside the business." With respect come honors.

WGNX has won Society of Professional Journalism awards for deadline and business reporting and four Atlanta Association of Black Journalists awards. "News at 10" is also nominated for eight local Emmy Awards (winners will be named June 30). Further evidence of the newscast's arrival is its Emmy nomination for news excellencespot news reporting. That report about Ku Klux Klan marches in Forsyth County aired during the program's first week on the air. The expanded show, which replaces the "USA Tonight" news program in the p.m.

slot, will rely on CNN footage on international and national stories. The 33-person staff, which Mr. Frazier estimates is only a third as large as those at the network affiliates, will concentrate on local and state news. WGNX's staff isnt spread out over several newscasts, as its competition is. "Our focus is all New duties: Kathleen Kennedy and something deeper and stronger much like a relationship." He laughed.

"I can't believe I just said that." The success of "News at 10" didn't happen overnight. The program began taking shape in 1988, when Mr. Frazier assembled the on-air team: Mr. Cokely, now 35, and Gwen Scott, 42, as weeknight anchors; and Karyn Greer, 28, and John McKnight, 40, as weekend anchors. Since then, Ms.

Scott has returned to CNN, and Ms. Greer has moved to weeknights. Original executive producer Cindy Glozier, who has left the station, is an Emmy nominee for individual excellencenews program producer. All the current anchors except Ms. Kennedy, the 25-year-, old sister of WSBChannel 2 re Jennifer A.

Kill Staff writer Years ago, Barbara Walters was a guest on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Mr. Carson, with more than a hint of devilment, asked Ms. Walters the kind of personal questions about her marriage, for example for which she, as celebrity interviewer non pareil, was noted. But Ms. Walters politely and steadfastly refused to answer.

Apparently, Ms. Walters still doesn't believe turnabout is fair play, having discouraged friends and family from cooperating with Barbara Walters Jerry Oppenheimer, author of this unauthorized biography. Until Ms. Walters decides to write or authorize a biography, the world won't know if the poor-little-rich-Jewish-girl-on-the-outside-looking-in as presented by Mr. Oppehheimef is her true self.

That Ms. Walters is a force in American television is fact. Unfortunately, Mr. Oppenheimer does little to clarify whether he thinks she has been a force for good or evil. (Mr.

Oppenheimer seems to be simultaneously intrigued and somewhat repulsed by his subject.) Her early life, however, contains hints of what may have led Ms. Walters to MOM, JUNE on one newscast, Frazier said. "All our energy is geared toward the 10 o'clock hour." The newscast will offer new weekday features. Twice a week, weekend anchor Kathleen Kennedy will do entertainment stories. The other three nights will be split among health and recreation features and meteorologist Denny Moore's reports on people and places around Georgia.

Arbitron ratings indicate that the "News at 10" audience has doubled since it went on the air, to a 4 rating and 6 share in May. Ratings for network affiliates' 11 p.m. broadcasts in May were more than two or three times greater. WGNX ensconced in the columned Shepherd estate at 1810 Briarcliff Road in northeast Atlanta, a stone's throw from Channel 5 doesn't have a satellite truck. And when the station needs a helicopter, it rents one.

Mr. Frazier said the fact that the station had "no tradition already in place" has made for a more tightly knit news team. "The initial attraction had a lot of high emotion and excitement. Now we've settled into trol knobs and dials should be easier to see. Roads should be lighted better and signs painted in more highly contrasting colors.

With the number of older people expected to mushroom in the next 30 years, the issue of older drivers has become a hot topic. Whatever steps are taken, they almost certainly won't include setting an age at which driver retesting or limits of any kind is required. Driving skill doesn't decline evenly, and age cutoffs have been assailed as discriminatory. And the elderly are a powerful political constituency. The best idea, Mr.

Malfetti says, is retesting all drivers every four years. But money is scarce. So the burden of getting unsafe drivers off the road often falls to those for whom it is most upsetting: their families. Driving: Many seniors slow to give up their mobility fashion her curious brand of journalism. As related by Mr.

Oppenheimer, while seemingly repelled by the notoriety that accompanied her father Lou Walters's Latin Quarter nightclub empire, Ms. Walters nonetheless was fascinated by the stars and personalities it attracted. More important, she realized that others were interested in these people. The popularity of magazines such as People, Fame and Vanity Fair and TV programs such as "Entertainment Tonight" are proof that Ms. Walters was right, though calling her interviews "journalism" may cause dyed-in-the-wool journalists to cringe.

In chronicling her rise from writer to "Today" show personality to supernova co-anchor with Harry Reasoner on "ABC World News Tonight" to her current job as co-host of "2020," Mr. Oppenheimer reveals Ms. Walters to be ambitious and tenacious. However, the book fails to explain "what makes Barbara tick," as she might put it to one of her subjects. But given the public's appetite for her own brand of skim-the-surface journalism, how many readers really care? FY0UWAH7T0 RELAX AT PINWEK TAKE THIS BEFORE BACH MEAL.

"Elderly people kind of compensate by riding more slowly, being more careful, avoiding dense traffic," the 69-year-old Mr. Malfetti says. Unfortunately, older drivers allow their minds to wander, fail to yield right of way, take longer to respond to hazards, or fail to negotiate complex intersections, says Sam Yacksich executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington, D.C.
