WHEAT MAY JOINT SOON Frost Would Then Be Fatal Heavy TegetatJon May Cause Smothering. Some of the farmers of the county are expressing complaint about the early sowing of wheat.

The wheat sowed early in September is now several Inches high and threatening to grow so fast that joints will appear before cold weather sets in. In case of such an event, the first frost would kill the cereal completely oft. There should be no snow at all for It to mature in the spring. Another danger from the early sowing Is the fact that if too profuse a vegetation comes in tHe fall smothering Is likely to set in during the winter. This is Just as bad as Jointing, for it means a failure of crops.

Several years ago 'just such a thing happened to the wheat crop In this section of the country. During the fall good weather held out until the wheat was several inches high. A hard winter came and during It the wheat crop actually smothered out. Still another complaint Is heard from all sections of the state. This is to the effect that flies are eating the In consideration of all, some of the early birds are wishing that they had not sown so soon.

One field of early planted wheat near Mardenis is nearly a foot high. Consequences of a frost can only be guessed at. R. A. Brown advocates mowing it, Just the same as they do in the west, or else turning stock in on It for pasture.

The only objection to the latter is the possibility of its getting tramped down. LITTLE BALD SPOT Men, Be Sensible, Dont Let It Grow More Conspicuous. GOOD MARKET FOR HAY Henry Willis of Uorth Webster Tells Experience Cot Several Tons of Hay from Few Acres. Although there are few people who raise alfalfa to any extent in this county, it is well known that It can be done. Some few people bow a few acres of the plant and get three crops a year.

Most of the crops bo raised are used for feed, although there is always a good market for the product. Henry Willis, a farmer of near North Webster, wrote the following about alfalfa: "I have been asked to tell the farm ers how I started my little patch of alfalfa. All seem to think it very dificult to raise in this state, but quite the contrary is true in my case. In the Bpring of 1909 I had four and one fourth acreB plowed and harrowed once with a spike tooth harrow. I sowed fourteen pounds of seed and dragged it with the teeth Blanting back over it.

I cut it once that summer; got about one ton of alfalfa and weeds and pastured it in the fall. The first cutting this summer, 1910, was nearly three barely a ton the second cutting on account of the drouth. For two weeks after the second cutting it looked bad on account of the drouth, but a few days after tne rain came It started up like a mushroom. I cut it the third time two weeks ago and got two good loads of hay. It is clay soil, very stony.

This may be of Interest to many of your farmer readers. I think some of the alfalfa growers go to extremes In regard to seed bed. It makes the farmers afraid to try it." REPORT THAT STEAMER MECAL0R HAS SUNK New Orleans. Oct. 19 Th sinking of the steamer Mecalor.
