C4 Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000 LIVING The Atlanta Journal-Constitution nsMnz enters dark side of Net: Racists, extremists 1 By Frances Katz fkaaajc.com "There is evil in the world. It's something we shouldn't forget." That's the message behind an HBO documentary called "Hate.com: Extremists on the Internet. The program documents the proliferation of hate sites preaching racist, anti-Semitic and anti-gay messages. The show is part of HBO's "America Undercover" documentary series.

HBO also will launch a companion Web site offering tactics for promoting tolerance at www.hbo.comhatehurts.com. The production was shown to Atlanta law enforcement and community leaders Wednesday and was followed by a panel dis cussion. For all the mainstream Web surfers buying books, listening to music or e-mailing "Hate.com: I Extremists on the Internet" 10 p.m. Monday on HBO (4072101) friends online, there is another, little-known segment of the population logging on to the Web reading white supremacist literature, downloading directions for making pipe bombs and learning how to carry out terrorist acts against persons or groups the sites say deserve to die. "Hate.com" is narrated by Morris Dees, co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center (www.splcenter.org), a Montgomery-based organization that has become nationally known for its legal and educational efforts against white supremacist groups.

But along with Dees are the voices of hate on the Internet, including Don Black, founder of what many consider the first hate site on the Web, Stormfront (www.stormfront.org) Black and others, including Matt Hale, who runs the World Church of the Creator Web site, and William L. John Sale want to work toward a "whiter and brighter world." Many of those attending Wednesday's special showing said "Hate.com" made an important statement about the Internet as a growing outlet for hate groups and the criminal actions that often result from the groups behind these sites. "This program is a double-edged sword," FBI special agent Ted Jackson said during the panel discussion. "The bottom line for law enforcement is that people don't understand that these things are going on." Said Judy Marx of the American Jewish Committee: "What's shocking was the confidence they had in the fact that they are right and we are wrong.

These are intelligent, charismatic people tragically enough." But stamping out hate sites on the Web is difficult, if not impossible, to do and none of the panelists or law enforcement agents said they want to trample the First Amendment in the process. Rather, they favor teaching tolerance. No one advocated censoring the Web sites, only making sure that those who commit crimes based on hate or something they've seen on a hate site are brought to justice. "The legal lines are hard to draw," said Steve Scarborough of the Lambda Legal Defense Fund, a national organization working for the civil rights of lesbians, gays and people with HIV. "That's the challenge for all of us.

The remedy for speech is more speech," Scarborough said. "There is great value in teaching and speaking and sharing ideas." chief retiring 2000," to air at 9 p.m. Nov. 5 two days before the election. Nothing official, but smart money says both pols will take the bait.

CBS' news magazine "48 Hours" offers an interview at 8 tonight (VCR-Plus: 9819) with Lori Berenson, an American accused of terrorism and held in Peru for five years.

"I am not a terrorist by any means; quite the contrary, I do not believe in any act of terrorism," Berenson, 30, of New York, told CBS. She was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 after a military tribunal claimed she plotted with Marxist rebels in a foiled attack on the Peruvian congress. Her conviction was overturned recently, but she is being retried in civil court. Judd, Crow and Etheridge, all armed with guitars, powered their way through Crow's "If It Makes You Happy." Destiny's Child skipped their hip-hop hits in favor of a gospel number. The show's finest moments were the smaller ones: Seven women sitting on stools, picking guitars and paying tribute to Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin.

It was a scene, according to producer Ken Ehrlich, that was unrehearsed. "They wanted to try it, so we're going to let them," he said during last week's taping. But it is the show's finale when the women join to sing a cappella that proves women definitely rock. Georgia Public Broadcasting pie who want to hear it. "The kind of person who looks at a hate site would never go to a Klan rally," says Black, the so-called godfather of hate on the Net.

"They probably couldn't even find one. This is the opportunity we've been looking for. You just need a Web site." Says Hale, who has been denied a license to practice law in his home state of Illinois, "People can hear about our message without leaving their homes." Hale, Black and others operate just two of the estimated 350 hate sites on the Internet. The documentary ties hate-oriented Web sites to some of this country's most notorious acts of terrorism, including the Oklahoma City bombing of the Murrah Federal Building, the shooting at the North Valley Jewish Community Center near Los Angeles and the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta in July 1996. "Hate.com" is a disturbing look at the dark side of the Net and the people who want to take their online ideologies offline into the real world.

These hate sites are as slick and professionally done as any commercial e-commerce site or search engine. The images are disturbing to those who don't share these views but the arguments these sites make to validate their views are well-crafted. Hale's site in particular works to reach out to the "lone wolf Web surfer and rebels without a cause. FROM STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES Claude Vickers, named executive director at Georgia Public Broadcasting 17 months ago when the statewide public TV and radio system was mired in debt and fiscal disarray, announced his retirement on Wednesday. Vickers, 57, was state auditor when Gov. Roy Barnes recommended him to run GPB in June 1999. His mandate from a new board of directors was to clean up years of financial mismanagement to win back the confidence of viewers and state legislators, both of whom contribute to the network's funding.

Vickers largely succeeded. GPB's expenditures for the last fiscal year were $30 million $5.2 million less than the previous fiscal year. And a preliminary audit just gave the organization its first positive, "unqualified" audit in at least six years, meaning auditors found no conditions that could result in misstatement of the financial report. "It's about time for women to band together and use their power, their influence to raise awareness," Lauper said in an interview. The concert, airing during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is part of the cable network's six-year campaign "Our Lifetime Commitment: Stop Breast Cancer for Life." It will serve as a catalyst for the NBCC's "Make Breast Cancer History" donation and pledge campaign, which includes a petition drive asking voters to consider a political candidate's stance on breast cancer issues before voting. For many of those taking the stage, the campaign is personal.
