Authorities said John Kelly Bass had been flying only a short time before a woman who lived near his home in the 600 block of Laurelwood Drive saw the plane drop down among the trees and vanish. The woman called 911 about 1 p.m., and a Phoenix Air Care helicopter from Griffin spotted the plane lodged in a crook in a pine tree about 20 minutes later.

When rescue crews arrived they found Bass, who was hanging lifeless upside down from the plane. They used ropes and tree climbing equipment to get him and the plane down. We Find It. TIFTON Three men charged in slaying of teenager Three men have been charged with murder in the weekend slaying of Calvin Dewayne Alexander, who was shot after he returned to Tifton from a nightclub in Sylvester. Police said Alexander, 18, of Tifton was shot multiple times about 4 a.m. Sunday as he stood outside a Tifton home. Three men who had argued with Alexander at the nightclub drove up in a car just before the shooting, a police statement said. Charged with murder are Jeffery Arnez Crutch-field and Lester Mills, both 20, and Leon Anderson, 22, all of Sylvester.

Anderson also was charged with obstruction of a police officer and hindering the apprehension of a criminal. AUGUSTA Fourth murder charge lodged against suspect Police have filed a fourth murder charge against Reinaldo J. Rivera, the man suspected of a series of killings of young women in the Augusta area. Rivera was charged with murder late Monday in Columbia County after the skeletal remains of Tabitha Leigh Bosdell, 18, of Augusta were identified. Family members said the last time they saw Bosdell was on June 22, when they dropped her off at a Huddle House restaurant where she was going to apply for a second job.

She was supposed to go from there to her job as a telemarketer. From staff and wire reports I area but did not find the man. ALBANY Candidate faces hearing for outburst at debate Green Party candidate Jeff Gates faces a hearing on disorderly conduct charges in Albany after an outburst that disrupted the start of Monday's U.S. Senate debate between Sen. Zell Miller and Mack Mattingly.

Gates, an Atlanta lawyer and author, was released Tuesday from the Dougherty County Jail on a $181 bond, according to jail officials. He is scheduled to appear Oct. 30 in Albany Municipal Court. He was one of five other candidates in the Nov. 7 nonpartisan race not invited to Monday night's debate.

CLAYTON COUNTY Woman's face, neck burned during surgery A Morrow woman undergoing minor outpatient surgery to remove a facial growth was burned when an electric spark from a cauterizing device ignited an oxygen mask. Eunice Bates, 69, suffered first- and second-degree burns on the face and neck Monday, though Southern Regional Medical Center personnel "almost instantaneously" snuffed out the flames, said hospital spokesman Rick Smith. "She suffered no serious injuries and is doing fine, but we're keeping her for observation," Smith said, adding that Bates probably will be released today. Smith said Bates was being treated with an electrocautery instrument to stop bleeding when the oxygen mask she wore apparently caused the device to ignite. She has retained a lawyer in the case.

COBB COUNTY Teen faces hearing on status for trial A Juvenile Court hearing scheduled for today to determine if a 15-year-old girl should be tried as an adult has been rescheduled for Nov. 1. The delay is to allow for a psychological evaluation of the girl. Lauderdale Ft Myers ATLANTA Man dies of injuries after robbery attack An Atlanta man died Monday of a beating he received when his home was invaded by a trio of robbers early Sunday, authorities said. Wallace Edwin Thomas II, 49, succumbed to his injuries about 3 p.m. at Grady Memorial Hospital, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office. Three men forced their way into Thomas' Dill Avenue home about 1 a.m. Sunday and demanded cash, said Atlanta police spokesman John Quigley.

"At this point we're looking at it as a home invasion and attempted robbery," he said. Thomas was owner of the Chill City Cafe on Luckie Street and the Level 2 art gallery. DEKALB COUNTY Two masked gunmen flee after bank holdup Two masked men screaming profanities and waving handguns held up the Tucker Federal Bank on Wesley Chapel Road in Decatur on Monday morning. Theodore Jackson, special agent in charge of the Atlanta FBI office, said the two men burst into the bank around 11 a.m. and ordered employees and customers to hit the floor.

While one of the robbers kept watch over the people on the ground, the other man jumped over the counter and took an undetermined amount of cash. The men ran to a getaway car they had stashed nearby, Jackson said. Jackson said a "bank security device" later went off inside their getaway car, which later was found by DeKalb police. A reward is being offered for information about the incident; anyone with such knowledge is asked to call the FBI at 404-679-9000 or the DeKalb police at 404-294-2566. Man with 'long guns' seen near high school DeKalb school officials temporarily stepped up security at Lakeside High School and nearby elementary schools after a school employee reported seeing a man with a gun bag in the area Tuesday afternoon.

School district spokesman Spencer Ragsdale said the man was spotted walking on Briarcliff Road about 2 p.m. near Lakeside, but he never entered school property. Ragsdale said an assistant principal and a school police officer confronted the man, who dropped a bag containing "two long guns" and fled into the woods.
