Hollywood's attitude seems to be, 'let's not offend our enemy'. "Look at what TV's done to people like Jackie Gleason and Sid Caesar. They didn't lose their ability. The smart boys on Madison Avenue said they weren't selling product. So off they went. The intrepid Egan added that TV producers and directors are scared to death of the ad boys. "The big star of every TV show Is the commercial. ,'3ut they never warn you in advance, or advertise it that way. Commercials are filmed at costs as high as $50,000 for 20 seconds of air time." Egan isn't on a sour grapes kick. He's turned down hundreds of video offers, accepting only four. Currently he's being touted for an Academy Award Oscar for his role in "Slaughter on 10th Avenue." "How can you do a dramatic story in 22 minutss?" he asks. "It takes longer than thac to read eh Sunday funnies. "TV builds up a story to an emotional climax, and then when the actor is ready to give his best effort they cut to the sales pitch. "These gray flannel suit characters aren't artists, they're businessmen. And if anything ruins television you can bet that they •will be responsible."
