Dr. William Barnet, or Robert Ogden, juna Efq. at Elixahethtown, Mr. Manuel Jnfephfon in Philadelphia, Meffrs. Cary, Williams, and Co.

in New York. To the PUBLIC. THE fulfciiber having been informed that a report had been propagated at Eliiabethtown (which, with many pcrfona there, had gained belief) that Mr. Jacque Carat, the French gentleman who fuffered the lofs fet forth in the above adverrife ment, and Caufed the fame to be publiilied in feverat newfpapers, had impofed upon the public therewith that he had no money ftolen from him and that his puhli thing it, was a fallacy calculated with defign to elude the payment of a large fum he owed ira New York That in confluence of this all further In quiries to difcover the thief or thieves, had been fufpended; and, that from appearances, the affair feemed to be confidned as if it had never happened. Now, in order to dojuftire to, and vindicate the reputation of a perfon who is a ftrangerin this country, and who has been injured not only in his property, but alfo in bit character, I do hereby fiilemnly declare that in the afternoon ot the 24th June laft, I paid to the faid Mr.

Carat the above ad vertifed fum of money In crowns and dollars, which he, at my houfe, and in my prefence, put into twofrveral bags, and then put them into a box which had been made for the purpofe, nailed it down very fecurely, and had it carried to his lodging at th Bunch of Grapes Tavern, from whence he fet out the next morning in the ftage, on his way to New York. I do further declare, and allure the good people at Elixahethtown, and the public in general, that I have been acquainted with the faid Mr. Carat upwards of twenty years, and ever found him a man of Uriel honor and veracity a man who ever profeffed a great regard for this country, and, to my know, ledge, has done many kind and benevolent ads to feveral of its inhabitants, when chance or bufinefs brought them to his country. I am alfo morally pofitive that he was not indebted to any perfon what ever in New York, as I am particularly acquainted with all his bufinefs and tranfaAions. 1 MANUEL JOSEPHSON.
