Which it eventually does with all the insane gusto of an Americanized big-budget version of the chop-socky cheapies that show up on Kung-Fu Theater. "Big Trouble in Utile China" is mindless entertainment on a mind-boggling scale. Sometimes, you can't help but wonder if it's too much of a good thing. But like any joy-ride, it's the overdone flourishes that make the trip worth taking and "Big Trouble" has flourishes to spare.

"Big Trouble in Little China." An action-packed kung-fu comic book. Starring Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall. Directed by John Carpenter. Rated PG-13 for Shakespeare Company, is a perfect-sounding Basil shrewd, egocentric and not always sure what to do with the overly-affectionate Olivia. "Amazing," enthuses Basil's hew partner-in-crime-solving.

Dr. Dawson, when the detective correctly deduces the rotund rodent's entire life history from one patched sleeve. "Actually, it's elementary," replies the indefatigable Basil. "The Great Mouse Detective" is amazing and elementary. It's a brilliant step back to basics and a welcome return of the one and only Disney magic.

My five-year-old expert, Katie, liked the duel-to-the-death the best, but she was also very glad to be sitting on her dad's lap during the scarier parts. Basil and Ratigan are most worthy opponents who pride themselves on their their cleverness and on outwitting each other (a most welcome change from the glorification of brute-force.) Ratigan, who looks a bit like Sid Caesar's top-hatted hobo, is "played" by Vincent Price who proves he would've made a fine Moriarity if given the chance.

Barry Ingham, a member of the Royal witch or Sleeping Beauty's toweiing dragon need to know right away that "The Great Mouse Detective" doesn't pull its thrills and chills. There's a monstrous fat cat that hungrily disposes of any Ratigan minion who falls out of favor. And a hair-raising fight-to-the-finish in and around Big Ben. And even a little sex in the form of a white-mouse chanteuse who performs a G-rated strip-tease in a waterfront dive called The Rat Trap. "The Great Mouse Detective" is no baby-movie to park your under-five at while you mall-crawl.

It's a full-blown animated comedy-adventure that should be a lot more "Big Trouble in Little China" is. in essence, a high-spirited, live-action comic book. Its tongue-in-cheek tone and non-stop heroics can be a little wearying the movie could lose a good 20 minutes but Carpenter and his lively cast seem to be having such a good time that the easiest thing to do is relax and enjoy the ride. In a way, this is the movie "Escape from New York" was trying to be but never quite managed to pull off. The crucial difference is that "Big Trouble" doesn't take itself seriously.
