If this is asking to mucn of the Justice Department (in view of its record), why does it not at least issue a warning for the "White Supremacists" to break it up or face prosecution? After pressure had been brought to bear, the Department aia ao something of this sort prior to the IMS Georgia primary, when Tal madglte registrars were arbitrarily challenging and disqualifying thousands of Negro registrants. So healthy was the respect of these registrars for the long arm of Uncle Sam that they not only stopped challenging Negroes, but voluntarily reinstated many of those whom they had already drop ped from the voting lists.

Chief interest in the conference will be disposition of Libya. The five runners up for each scholarship to be granted will receive the College Entrance Awards, each of which carries a grant of $50 payable if the winner enters college by the fall of 1948. These awards are financed by the Pepsi Cola Company as a part of its public service program, but a winner of a scholarship has no obligation to the Pepsi Cola Com pany either1 during the four years in which scholarship is in effect or after he has graduated. DATES LISTED Oct. 24 has been set as the closing date of registration for this year's competition.

On Friday, Nov. 21, all candidates will take a special aptitude test in their own schools. The students in each State who receive the highest scores on this preliminary test will then take a second examination cn Jan. 24. This will be the regular supervised scholastic aptitude test of the College Entrance Examination Board, the fees for which will be paid by the Pepsi Cola Scholarship Board.

The contestants in each State who receive the highest scores on this final test and who have financial need will win the four year college scholarships, and the runners up will receive the Entrance Awards. PITTS BU COU JE SATURDAY, OCTOBER Issue Stafement WASHINGTON (ANP) The late summer rise in industrial em ployment began "on schedule," Ewan Clague, commissioner of labor statistics, told the press Mon day. The Nation's economic machine picked up 400,000 new Industrial jobs in August, causing unemploy ment to drop and non farm employes to hit a new 1947 peak.

PLACED BY USES Robert C. Goodwin stated in his latest report that more than 25 per cent of job replacements by the United States Employment Service were non whites. The re port stated that 115,000 non white, non agricultural workers were placed In jobs by USES. This was an Increase of 5s per cent over the previous month, bringing placements of non whites to the highest level of the year. However, service and the unskilled occupational categories accounted for over nine out of ten of these placements.

DOMESTIC WORK UP The 45,000 non whites placed in private households showed an in crease of near 6 per cent over the previous month. The second larg est number, 20,000. were placed in manufacturing. Only twenty two non whites were placed in special Government projects, while 2,401 were given employment in regular Government establishments. Over half of the placements of non whites were made in the fol lowing six States: New York, near Texas, almost Ala Ohio and Florida, around 6,000 each and Tennessee almost 5,000.

The George Washington Carver Scholarship Foundation of Alameda County is making appeals for a scholarship fund from which it might make an award Jan. 5. 1948, on the date set aside by Congress as "Carver Day" in 1946.
