They'll try to catch the killer over the next eight weeks, but some of them will be "killed," which is this show's equivalent of havingyour torch snuffed at a tribal council. The winner gets $250,000. The viewer gets a headache. In tonight's premiere, however, none of this is explained so straightforwardly- There are two problems with "Murder in Small Town First, there are way too many people to follow.

It starts with the killer filming his murder of the family, including chasing a screaming teenage girl into her room, and making the mother plead for her life.

Then there's lot of (fake) blood, creepy music and those "Blair Witch" point-of-view shots of people (some real, some acting) scared out of their gourd. It would be going too far to call it "snuff reality," but it's definitely not a show for the whole family, like "Survivor" is. It's a show for younger viewers who've cut their media teeth on the "Scream" trilogy, but who still fancy themselves as whodunit detectives. That may not be a very large audience, but hey, it's summer, and Fox would have been running reruns anyway. He became a kind of unofficial leader of the group, and people kept telling him he should be on "Saturday Night Live." After eight years at Whole World, Krall says, he started thinking, "Maybe they're right." So he moved to Los Angeles with a tape he'd made of himself.

His manager heard about the "Downer Channel" audition and sent the tape. Shortly afterward, Krall was standing in front of Steve Martin, who asked him to tell a funny story about himself. "My life seemed immediately boring," Krall says. But he then launched into a story about a message left on his answering machine by an ex-girlfriend. He got the job.

His manager, in the business 25 years, says he'd never seen anything like it. Krall says Martin has been helpful, mainly encouraging him to trust his instincts, which he calls "the biggest compliment" But Krall adds, "I'm still intimidated when he comes in the room. I don't want to fake it I'd rather just be uncomfortable with him." If his unusual background has an influence on his comedy, Krall it's this: "It gives me a perspective on the world that makes me realize what's important and what's not. It's hard for me to take too many things seriously, everyday things, petty things. It's such a huge world out there.

I don't mind being ridiculous. What good's it do to walk around being cool? I use it as a license to be myself." Who wouldn't be? This puppy would fry Hercule Poirot's little gray cells; Lt Columbo would take one look, shake his head and just drive away. But let's dive in. The producers went to the tiny Maine town of Eastport, renamed it Sunrise and told the locals they were making a TV movie. Then they brought in and trained more than 40 improvisational actors, each of whom plays a character.

Then they staged a murder of a local family (actually more actors). Finally, they brought in 10 contes- Actor finds KRALL, from CI Adds Morton: "It's one of those great old show business stories." Krall is trying to take it all in stride. "It's pretty bizarre," he says. "I'm still trying to catch up to it." Born in California, Krall was a Navy brat who lived all over the world, including South Vietnam, where his parents met during the war. He describes his mother's family as divided by the war there the way families were during America's Civil War.

His grandfather and one uncle were loyal to the Communist North, while another uncle was a helicopter pilot for the South Vietnamese army. Krall's mother, Yung, became a spy for the CIA and FBI, gathering information to testify against a State Department official convicted of selling secrets to the Communists. As a result, in his early years Krall was tailed by FBI agents assigned to assure the family's safety. Agents watched him as he went back and forth to school, and he went to live with his godparents in Arizona after he received a death threat while his mother testified in a trial. "It was so much a part of my life that it was not even odd enough to talk about," Krall says.

"Now, it's like, 'Oh my god!" But with the war over and the family settled in Snellville, Krall became just another awkward geek at Litho-nia's Shiloh High. Moving so often, he had had few friends and often had entertained himself by making up his own radio shows and practicing different voices and accents. "In high school, I missed the social boat completely," he says. "I put aside my creativity to try to fit in socially and was an utter disaster." At one point, he signed up for an acting class but told friends he'd signed up for wrestling and the school had made a mistake. "I so overcom-pensated to be cool because I had no cool," he says.

He went on to become a marketing major at Georgia State University, and even joined a fraternity. Never really fit there, either. He was ranked nationally in tae kwon do, but he blew out a knee and gave it up. Then a friend took him to a play, he took an acting class and, in his junior year, he switched his major to film and theater. "I'd done a lot of that as a kid, then stopped when I was a teenager.

Then it all hit me in a short period of my life: The thing about acting is everyone's trying to get you back to the way you were as a-child. It was easy for me. It was just one layer away from what I was not" Yung Krall says Lance "takes after my father. My dad was a writer, a poet and a politician. Lance took after everything except his politics." She is director of multinational relations at Emory Northlake Regional Medical Center and author of "A Thousand Tears Falling" (Longstreet Press), a book about her experiences.

"I don't necessarily consider myself a comedian," says Krall, whose influences include Jackie Chan, Andy Kaufman and Ben Stiller. "If you asked me to tell you a joke, I couldn't do it.
