In this photograph, the object is photographed close-up, isolated from a context that vcali clarify its place in the religious life of the community. In "Two Pairs' of Legs" (1928-1929), the painted legs of a man and woman appear to dangle surrealistically in space, disassociated from the larger cOntexjt that would clarify their meaning: There is in Bravo's photogragKs an overwhelming sense of soiitudjj.

People are seen either as figures in a vast landscape, as in Skylight" (1938-1940), or isolated1 from a social context, as in the "TbeMaii from Papantla" (1934-1935). Through Sept. 21. 'i -O- 4 By Barbara McKenzft Special to The Conttilution 1 The 15 photographs in the current display at the High-Museum represent only a small fraction of the work of Manuel Alvarez Bravo. Yet they provide a generous sampling of the subjects and themes have preoccupied Mexico's most celebrated native photographer. Bravo was born in 1902 into a family with a tradition in the visual arts.

"My grandfather," he recalls, "was a painter who loved photography, and my father made portraits." But times were hard, and Bravo found it "important to study something profitable, something that would help the family economical- ly." And so, he pursued a career in accounting. Although he began photographing in 1922, he didn't make a full-time commitment to photography until 1930. In published interviews, Bravo talks about growing up during the Mexican Revolution. He describes hearing rifle fire on his way to school and stumbling upon dead bodies in the nearby countryside. "The aspect of death had a great in-'fluence on me I was also interested in the Ceremony of All Dead They used to sell children toys representing death skulls made of sugar which we would eat.

I think this is where the real feeling of Mexican duality comes from the duality of life and death." In his photographs, Bravo expresses this duality through the interplay of light and shadow, as in "Lengthened Light" (1944) with its delicate shadows of leaves and branches. In this photograph, as in "Two Women, a Large and Shadows" the shadows assume greater importance than the three dimensional objects that have created them. "In a certain way, the shadow, the absence of light, is the negation of the light," Bravo ex- silver print by Manuel Bravo. of whom were photographing in Mexico, and in 1935, he had an exhibition in the Palicio de Bellas Artes with Cartier-Bresson. But Bravo considers his work "more related to Mexican art and Mexican life than to photographic traditions." Several photographs deal directly with Mexican folk art, particularly "Votive Offering" (1969) with its embroidered angel, flowers, and Hill By Scott Cain Staff Writer When "The History of Impossibly Complicated Films" is written, an entire volume will be devoted to "The Transformers The Movie." This cartoon feature makes Anton-ioni's "L'Avventura" seem like an entertainment for simpletons.

I saw "The Transformers" during a matinee at a packed theater and never had the slightest clue as to what was taking Getting more irritable by the minute, I tried to console myself that, perhaps, this was like "The Care Bears Movie" and, as a jaundiced adult, I needed a 7-year-old child to explain it to me. But, no. After the movie was over, I asked several children if "The Transformers" made sense, and they assured me that it didn't (They loved it anyway.) Desperate for enlightenment, I plundered studio announcements. The De Laurentiis Entertainment Group had obligingly provided a four-page synopsis and, after reading it 20 times, I am still not able to reconcile their summary with what I saw on the screen. With trepidation," I pass along this much information: The story takes place in 2005.

The heroic Autobots want to liberate their home planet, Cybertron, from the evil De-cepticons. Before the Autobots can strike, the Deceptions launch an offensive of their own, attacking tobot City on Earth. I had hoped to derive a little pleasure out of identifying the voices. Among the actors contributing to the soundtrack are Robert Stack, Lionel Stander, Scatman Crothers, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle, Orson Welles and the much-despised Judd Nelson. The fact that children appreci- ate "The Transformers" proves only that non-stop action, is sufficient for. kiddie audiences, but I am irate anyway.

I am offended that "The Transformers" is a 90-minute toy commercial. Ambiguity in Bravo's work is more than a matter of style. It accounts for a sizable amount of meaning, as in "Sand and Small Pines" (1920s). At first glance, the sand hill, seen through the fore-' ground pines, seems like a distant mountain. Similarly, the partitioned fields in "Growing Landscape" (1972-1974) look like an aerial view encompassing acres of cultivated farm land. Although Edward Weston had a portrait studio in Mexico City in the early 1920s, he and Bravo never met.

But through Tina Modotti, he became acquainted with Weston's photographs, which he admired for their "purity" and "neatness."
